Astra

I think Astra will look less bulky as it rises more . Looks like at least 10 more floors to go. I was looking at it today, starting to look quite tall and making a big impact on the skyline, especially from the south looking north!!!

It’s exactly like the renders, are you surprised?

Agree. I don't think it looks bulky at all when considering the yet-to-come additional height. As far as the renderings go, we can only hope that the finished product will look as good as the renderings. I think it will.

No. The renderings had the same problem. But I had hoped it would look less bulky in reality than in a rendering.

I actually think it looks very slender from most angles in the skyline so far. I think that will only continue to be the case as it gets taller too.

I think could easily support them if they were residential towers. Maybe with a hotel component.

I don't think I've seen this mentioned, but the 2022 Census Bureau estimate has Salt Lake City with a population of 204,657, which is up about 5,000 from the 2020 Census. Even more significant because they estimate that the population of most of the inner-ring suburbs of Salt Lake City has actually declined in that time. If that rate of growth sustains Salt Lake City could be pushing 225,000 by the 2030 Census. There's a lot of units that have come online since then and are set to come online soon, too, so I wouldn't be surprised if the growth rate accelerates.

I was curious about this because, according to the census estimate, Salt Lake county's population would have actually decreased/remained the same in 2022. I don't really understand why or how that could be the case. The Utah Population committee estimates differ pretty significantly and do show growth although I'm not sure if they have individual city data.

Is the prison population included in the count? The new prison is within SLC proper so that may have contributed to the increase.

I think H Mart in South Jordan will be very popular and I would love to see another location or Asian shopping center actually downtown at some point. Something like Japan Village Plaza in LA would be awesome near the original location of Japantown (rip).

I had no idea, but SLC also had a historic Chinatown on Plum Alley until it was razed and replaced with the Regent St parking garage. I imagine the destruction of both Chinatown and Japantown led to the current congregation of Asian businesses and strip malls along state but if anyone has more specific insight into why they are located where they are I would be interested. It would be really satisfying to see some of these communities come back downtown in some form.

It’s the little-big things that make up a vast, rich, and vibrant urban culture. Chip away bit-by-bit, decade-after-decade.. suddenly a lot of town looks like this with the same story.

Whats represented is a flaw/intentional-design which is greater than what’s happening just here, but here is a textbook example of the sad state of affairs.
