The day the government stops charging so much for things like airport taxes of whatever they are called is the day that the airport becomes the wealthiest, most profitable industry in the city.

I've never heard of a private industry that reduced it's prices in any substantive way because it got a tax break. Same pie, just divided more towards business instead of government. Regular people and commuters would get screwed just the same as always.

There's already three bus routes that serve YYC at a cost of $3 from anywhere in the city. What more do you want? Free limo rides so you don't have to take the bus?

I believe the conversation they were having was with respect to the UPX in Toronto, which does seem pretty steep for most people. Next time I'm in Toronto I'll be taking regular TTC service for sure.

^ but the line isn't for 'most people'. It is for business and conference travelers, and the occasional down town denizen. The vast majority of people going to airports are dropped off by friends or family.

From what I gather, UPX is Toronto's version of London's Heathrow Express. With this in mind, the fee isn't out of line.

Question for those in the know on why certain flights are at certain airports..

I was recently planning a few flights from Calgary to Toronto, Toronto to New York, and New York to Calgary. My criteria was that I wanted only non-stop flights, preferably on the same carrier, and that larger planes ranked higher than smaller planes.

It turned out that these objectives could only be met by Westjet, but, only if the Toronto to New York flight landed at La Guardia, and the New York to Calgary flight originated at JFK.

Any idea why Westjet needs to fly in/out of two different airports in the region? Seems unusual.

La Guardia is restricted to local flights for the most part. Last time I flew out of there with WestJet my flight was delayed both ways, circling waiting for a landing spot, and waiting on the tarmac for a takeoff spot (we couldn't just wait in the terminal since another plane needed the gate).

A perfectly legal/publicly accessible place, but I'd prefer not to disclose it as we seem to be getting a lot more people coming out to spot. The biggest risk is that some won't follow the general rules of the land and end up with the airport cracking down on some of the best spots.

Your flights could also be done on AC with a routing YYC-YYZ-LGA/EWR-YYC.

Do you think it may have something to do with Westjet having to sublease a gate rather than having a dedicated gate? I assume they don't have any dedicated gates at JFK as their only flight is to YYC on a seasonal basis? I'm guessing based on your comments that they don't have a dedicated gate at La Guardia either.

I may have my terminology wrong here.

I'm always fascinated with the behind-the-scenes facts related to why flights go to certain airports.

Well not a big loss, I like westjet a bit better than AC anyway. Is there an advantage to EWR over other airports in the region?

Makes sense. So far my plane-spotting in some of the previously described spots near the new runway have been a total bust. Not a single plane, but obviously I'm just not going at the right times.
