I continue to be surprised how many Edmontonians feel they have to justify mediocrity. Maybe I should stop being surprised, and just come to expect it as one of Edmonton's many charms.

I've lived in several cities and I've seen a fair amount of crap. In Vancouver, the massive numbers of stick- built condos with leaky building envellopes and interior humidity problems is an example of poor design and improper applicaton for the environment. In Calgary, there are stick built condos all around the beltline, low rise condos where proper planning should have stepped in, and a proliferaton of conversion projects, in which 50 year old buildngs are given a gaudy facelift and sold as new, even though the building mechanicals and power systems are left original. Disgusting. Some of the original condos on the west end are pretty uninspiuring as well. Edmonton designs seem to be uninspiring, take the condos on 109 street north of the Save-on for example.

It's getting better in Calgary and Edmonton, but a far cry from the good projects going up in Port Moody and Downtown Vancouver.

Ya, and this project isn't being built in Downtown Edmonton, or Ole Strathcona.

Those condos you refer to are crap, and built during a economic slump. Are you trying to tell me theres nothing in Vancouver thats uninspiring that has been built in the last 10-15 years?

Think of the current projects that are starting to get built now, such as Century Park, and Icon. This is the way our latest development is going.

In Edmonton's case however, it's almost as if the city excels in design mediocrity, with absolutely no clue about how to pull itself out of its small-town very-prairie mindset. There's a big world out there; discover it and learn from it.

I would argue, murman, that you are not the target demographic for Edmonton, so I wouldn't worry too much.

Edmonton isn't for everybody. Those that believe the opposite are typically Blind Vancouverites that can't see beyond their utopian like dream world.
