Very cool photo with only touch of color from Butterdome in the far top right at U of A.
It's been snowing off and on in Calgary too, Calgary has in fact been close to setting cold temperature records ending of this week.

Okay, good points. I suppose my bias comes from the fact that most times I'm in Ottawa I end up staying in Hintonburg and spend most of my time in Centretown/Lower Town and Vanier

Surprising weather here too. Toronto hit 24.3C today and there was even a humidex reading: 29C.

I like variety (-40C to +40C) but my plants are having a fit.

Wow, 80 degrees of variation! You must be pretty versatile. Personally I don't think I'd want a range any greater than half that, say -10 to +30. I'm curious what sort of activities you find enjoyable in temps lower than -10? I suppose if you're an avid ice fisher you'd have access to more frozen surfaces.

After my stint in the army, weather doesn't bother me one little bit. Marching in full gear for 6 hours straight in the rain from 10pm-4am will do that. I enjoy weather and look forward to the change in seasons. Love rain, snow, sleet, ice storms, heat, humidity, cold, wind/no wind, lightning, thunder, and fascinated by tornadoes/hurricanes even though they cause havoc.

+40C, +20C, 0C, -20C, -40C are all enjoyable if you dress for those temperatures. Most people don't then complain that they're cold or hot. I drove in -47C to Labrador and it was a magical experience. Everything was frozen solid for miles. Every 30 minutes or so you'd see something move, you'd glance over, and it would invariably be an arctic fox or something like that.

Every type of weather has something interesting or pleasing to me. -40C snowmobiling would be tough but I'm not put off by extreme weather at all. When it was +40C in Toronto this summer I liked that too. I like it all. What I don't like is the same weather all the time. I'd pull my hair out if I was forced to live in some place like Florida for more than 3 months.

What bothers me are weather forecasts where the weather guy/girl tells us how terrible it is that snow is on its way, or that summer is over, or we're getting rain. They, personally, may not like these things but they shouldn't assume all of their viewers are upset about it. Don't tell me I'm supposed to be disappointed with you. If they don't like the weather they should keep it to themselves and stop trying to make everyone feel bad about it. Can they not for once talk enthusiastically talk about a cold snap of -25C on its way?

Well I suppose that's the best attitude! I mean, you can't change the weather and life is too short to be miserable over it.

Agree although I've always been able to find beauty/value where, at first glance, some see none.

The new skyline at Bay/Yonge always throws me off whenever I see it from an angle like that.

True, but I suffer from S.A.D. to some degree, and could not stand a place where it rains or is cloudy much of the time. There's generally a good diversity of weather in Toronto, but every few years we'll have a "La Nina" summer, which betokens cooler temperatures and more rain.

The surroundings, the ups and downs, lefts and rights, and that vista always make for an interesting drive down the DVP, but man, I literally can't remember the last time I drove it and there wasn't a backup somewhere. I haven't lived anywhere nearby since the summer of 1988 so I've probably only been on it ony a couple dozen times since because I'm usually taking the 401 to get across the city.

I guess if you're gonna be stuck in traffic, there's worse places for that to happen.

The last time was two weeks ago where I took the Bayview exit. Fantastic highway to drive on with very fun exit ramps as well. I also remember this from doing the Becel Ride for Heart over 20 years ago.

That's the right attitude. I am the same.

And I totally agree about broadcasters, though in fairness to true meteorologists generally it's not them that do this. Meteorologists typically are the most appreciative of variety in weather, and if you've ever seen for example weather forecasters in the second and third tiers of the U.S., they actually get all excited when there is snow in the forecast where they live!

The weather gloomsters in my observation are usually generalist talking heads who give out the forecast just like they give out sports scores or traffic or accident reports.

We actually have one on our local Radio-Canada station who seemingly expresses his dread at every forecast at this time of year. When we were approaching the freezing mark for the first time recently I heard him do it three days in a row. I mean, you live in Ottawa or Gatineau, it's going to get cold and colder. Deal with it. (Not to mention that in this region, a huge proportion of his chattering classes listenership are outdoorsy winter sports enthusiasts.)

I actually feel there is a collective negative reinforcement in all of that - both from media types and also in the general population. It contributes to a general feeling of malaise that doesn't have to be nearly as bad. We're now at the point where the reaction of a huge chunk of the population to a completely magical landscape of tree branches covered in freshly fallen snow is "YUCK", simply because it's a winter scene. To me, that's not a normal reaction and is the product of conditioning.
