I agree, side platforms can feel narrow and overcrowded, as is the case in Ottawa's underground CBD stations. That could be due to the lack of space they had to work with since they chose the narrowest (or maybe second narrowest) street to build the tunnel.
In my limited experience with one centre platform (on Confederation Line's eastern terminus at Blair), it's far easier to circulate and find a good spot to wait for the next train. Centre platforms are also great for terminus stations since riders don't need to think about which side the next train will arrive, an issue at Tunney's Pasture.
That said, accessibility advocates seem to prefer side platforms. For example, the blind and hard of seeing can use the wall to guide them along the platform. In Ottawa's CBD stations though, vertical circulation is along the wall, so that advantage is limited compared to say Vancouver's Dunsmuir tunnel stations that has vertical circulation separate from the platform, down the hall.
