In our latest video we talk about Toronto's "Lost" Subway Station, and what may have happened had it been better designed!

The federal government is going to announce a $2.7B fund to help transit operators transition to electric buses:

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/politics...-fund-to-electrify-canadas-public-buses/

I had suggested exactly this a while back. The return on helping transit operators electrify is decent. Both on emissions and long them finances.

This isn't new money. They are taking from an existing pot and saying you can only spend it on this, in effect forcing the provinces and cities to buy electric buses.

This is nothing but good news and a complete no-brainer.

It will help our bus manufacturing base which is formidable, cut emissions, spur our hydrogen sector, and reduce overall operating expenses for transit agencies themselves.

Subsidizing diesel buses that will be on the road for a decade is moronic. I've said before that the the feds should not subsidize any municipal or transit vehicles unless there are zero emissions. The only necessary exceptions are emergency vehicles.

Detailed renderings of all Millennium Line Broadway extension stations available on DailyHive: https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/broadway-subway-skytrain-millennium-line-extension-station-designs

Here are the project's features:
  • The new Broadway stations will feature elevators, stairs and both up and down escalators.
  • All stations will feature a concourse level.
  • Every station will include 3,300 square feet of retail.
  • No public washrooms are planned for the project, but space will be set aside at Arbutus (the terminus until the line is extended to UBC) and Broadway-City Hall (transfer between Millennium and Canada Lines).
  • Arbutus Station and Great Northern Way Station will have secure bike parkades.
  • Stations will only have one entrance, with a second emergency exit only.
  • Stations are designed for additional entrances in the future.

A few of the dozens of images:

Arbutus platform level, concourse and fare gates.

South Granville platform and concourse.

Broadway-City Hall cross-sections.

Emily Carr, with taller ceilings as this future station site will be used as the boring machine entry point.

The DailyHive article contains dozens of renderings and cross-sections. Worth a visit.

You're doing the Lord's work there before anyone from the Vancity forums had a chance to post this . Thanks for sharing!

I also just wanted to comment that the island platforms on all of the stations are criminally underrated.

I agree, side platforms can feel narrow and overcrowded, as is the case in Ottawa's underground CBD stations. That could be due to the lack of space they had to work with since they chose the narrowest (or maybe second narrowest) street to build the tunnel.

In my limited experience with one centre platform (on Confederation Line's eastern terminus at Blair), it's far easier to circulate and find a good spot to wait for the next train. Centre platforms are also great for terminus stations since riders don't need to think about which side the next train will arrive, an issue at Tunney's Pasture.

That said, accessibility advocates seem to prefer side platforms. For example, the blind and hard of seeing can use the wall to guide them along the platform. In Ottawa's CBD stations though, vertical circulation is along the wall, so that advantage is limited compared to say Vancouver's Dunsmuir tunnel stations that has vertical circulation separate from the platform, down the hall.

Demolition at Broadway and Main in Vancouver to make room for the new station. We'll start to see a lot more of this along Broadway throughout 2021 in preparation for the Millennium Line extension.

Platforms will be 80 meters, same as current Millenium and Expo Line stations.

At this point would the project be considered under construction?

Why does Vancouver always build Mickey Mouse stations?

Will they be expandable to 100 meters like Expo & Mill?

80 metres is just fine for an automated system that can handle 90 second frequencies.

I'd say so!

Those 80 meter platforms can achieve 25,000 phpd. The initial capacity will be set at 7,100 phpd based on this 2018 DailyHive article, so plenty of room for growth.

The stations are being built with space for future entrances when needed.

New Lincoln Fields (LF) renderings. Well, August 2020. I stumbled across them by accident on local councillor Theresa Kavanaugh's website yesterday evening when looking for something else related to the station.

The station will be the last stop before the Lines 1 and 3 split towards Algonquin and Moodie respectfully. Inbound passengers from either line will transfer here to go outbound on the other. For example, if someone gets on at Algonquin, headed to Moodie, they will get off at LF, across the centre platform and get on the next Moodie bound train. This will be common because the Moodie branch has major destinations like the National Defence HQ, Abbott pharmaceuticals and smaller office parks, while the Algonquin branch has Algonquin College and City of Ottawa offices.

The station will feature three tracks and two platforms (one centre and one side, with the side only used during low frequency hours so that all branches keep a certain level of service). It will also accommodate public washrooms, retail and a bus loop for urban west end bus transfers.

The August 2020 renderings are similar to the previous renderings, only with more detail and the new platform configuration.

I think for all it’s advocates there’s very little discussion of what makes good LRT systems work, I break it down in this video:

Just thought that I would share what was happening over in Winnipeg. 24 years seems pretty brutal to me for 3 lines of a BRT system .

For some context, this is the system that they would be constructing:
