Not really. They're completely re-aligning the highway in a few years. Why would they light 15kms of highway if it's going to be moved 1/2 a mile to the west in a few years (to accommodate an outer-outer-ring road's system's interchange with the intermodal site's location)? They're saving millions by waiting.

I don't know how HSR got on this topic, but seriously, I think that this is a classic case of traffic between Edmonton and Calgary being created, as opposed to being removed from the QE2. I honestly believe that in this case, if you build it, traffic will come, because 1 hour from downtown to downtown without security waits is just too attractive for a lot of people to pass up. It's nice enough that some people could actually work in Calgary and live in Edmonton, or vice-versa.

On the other hand, I do wonder if this venture is artificially environmentally friendly (powering this rail has to come from somewhere, right?), but if it's integrated with a station @ YEG which would give all Edmontonians easier access to their airport, I think I'd actually be leaning more in favor of this project than not. I'd rather see this ease traffic between our cities than an extra lane each way on the QE2 (THAT is a colossal waste of money, and this is coming from someone who loves freeways).

Because as long as the flight remains within Alberta from YXD (and doesn't connect elsewhere that requires security), you don't need security.

It is like they have it now. HSR is EDM-CAL no security. Peace Air was YXD-YYC no security and no 10 billlion in infrastructure.

Do you think no-security will last for the forseeable future? Also, I thought the HSR estimates were more in the $3-5 billion range...

5+. still waaaaaay more expensive than using an FBO.

As long as it stays w/in AB and does not deplane/enplane in a secure area, then yes.

FBO's do offer a totally different aspect to travel, mind you most user's are people with too much money flying on private aircraft.But as a example there is Integra air who flys from YEG to Lethbridge and Ft.Mac and uses a FBO were the rental cars are onsite,free WIFI,plus free coffee and snacks while pax wait for the flight.The no security is a big bonus aswell for these pax who can now show up 5 minutes before departure...

Saw the total numbers for the year today and ohhhhh are they good.

Somebody has to notice the growth pattern and demand for other points, oh wait they did.Cant wait!!!

In the Edmonton Sun Sat morning Yukon Jack has a column that supports opening the Muni.

I have a suggestion. If YEG has a big announcement coming up maybe it would be a good time to call a press conference and announce it now? It could take the starch out of the ongoing Muni Debate and allow EAA people to explain why it would be a bad move to startup the Muni again - get their point across so to speak.

Wait wait...Yukon Jack has an article in the Edmonton Sun? About the Muni? Wow...the Sun MUST be a tabloid to let a guy like that write an article.

I hear that along with construction of the terminal expansion and hotel, that there will be a new cargo terminal that is going to be built. I wonder if this is part of Port Alberta, which we should be hearing more about soon!

Could this be the "big" news? Or are we looking at some increased passenger service as well??

I was thinking the same thing, I think this announcement may have something to do with the Port Alberta, but I'm not sure.

I also anticipate hearing new service sometimes during 08 as YEGs PAX numbers have reached a new milestone ~ +6 million PAX.

I wonder if its going to involve a major player like CN or CP... along with that whole Port Alberta thing, and a major development in that, combined with the big airport expansion plans. Could we also see some sort of announcement for BUS/LRT service to YEG?

I understand that CP is building a terminal south of the city. Although CN already has a terminal in the west-end, I could see them building something too, considering they are the ones who have the tracks out to Prince Rupert.

Unless CN sees a huge interlinking option, with the Henday and QE2 there should be no difficulty moving cargo from the CN terminal to the airport by road. You don't ship something across the ocean by boat to then 'last mile' it by air, it doesn't really make sense unless it is being shipped to the Canadian North.

With the cargo projections in the ERAA documents being so low for the next 40 years, I think they realize this too. Port Alberta is more about developing more airport land as trade parks, to provide a secondary non air dependent revenue stream to the airport than increasing cargo growth.

It is also about branding to provide new energy and better consumer identification with the airport as a IO operation.

Rumor has it that the new terminal project will hit the streets today. Can't wait to see what it looks like. One thing is for sure: It is going to be HUGE.
