Yup. One down, one to go.

Buzz isn't a source, they literally read this forum and make articles out of what we say.

Great news though. Getting some Bellevue vibes downtown with the MS/Nordstrom pairing.

I'm not so sure MS is on an upwards swing though - the Xbox One is a bit of a disaster, they can't seem to get anyone to buy their phones or tablets, and of course no one buys PCs anymore.

That's great news about Microsoft taking that much space and adding ~400 jobs. A very welcome development.

and Miller Thomson is taking 1/6th of the total space (probably 2/3rds of a floor (still a lot of space))
Cited here:
http://www.vancouversun.com/National...739/story.html

- so there'd be one and a third floors available?

That's like saying "nobody goes there anymore, it's too crowded". Plus "PCs" includes all non-Apple laptops and those aren't exactly gathering dust on shelves.

The XB1 was beaten by the PS4, but that's hardly Microsoft's big bet.

Office 365 has been a huge success.

I don't think they can hear your opinion with all of the cash they are drowning in:

The technologies mentioned in the Vancouver Sun article that this Microsoft location would focus on are VERY popular technologies in enterprises. I wouldn't be worried about them...

Upswing or not, MS is sitting on a gigantic pile of money, which they continue to rake it in at a prodigious rate, and they're using a small tranche of their earnings to harness some local brainpower. I'm very happy with their decision to do so. This isn't a government subsidy-induced balance sheet-exercise or a wet behind the ears start up; MS wouldn't be expanding their presence here were it not for them seeing it as a profitable opportunity.

Moreover, their decision to locate downtown is highly indicative of whom they wish to attract. For the sake of argument, they if it were purely space in a large floorplate office building that they were after, they could have picked up space in that derelict office building on 104th in Surrey for a lease that would be pennies on the dollar of what they will be paying for their top floor spaces at 725 Granville. However they would not be able to attract the talent they are after with such an address.

Also notable that this will make Vancouver their biggest Canadian presence.

Two questions, based on the quoted observations:
1: does the large planned Microsoft presence in Vancouver have anything to do with being near Redmond (Seattle)?
2: Does this herald the eventual possibility of Vancouver becoming another Silicon Valley?

You're really rolling your eyes for that? Most young people don't even think of buying PC's anymore. People are not learning how to type on a keyboard. Sales back that up.

This is not an opinion, and shipped =/= sold.

MS is obviously still a behemoth but only from past success and office. Not the right place for this discussion though.

Ya, a lot, like all of them. Not to mention all government and public institutions.

Actually tablet sales have already slowed down. People who want one have one, and few people are seeing the need to upgrade what they have.

Rankings and fortune telling aside, now is still a good time to attract companies that grew big in San Francisco and would appreciate some breathing room away from the crushing crowd.

As for Washington state, I think only Valve software might be left without a location. Hopefully travel to Seattle continues to improve.

Excellent news regarding Microsoft. More big employers in town will hopefully keep driving up the local high-tech salaries which are still fairly low (Vancouver Sun article mentions average being only $75k. It is still cheap to hire employees in Vancouver vs. in Silicon Valley or other big cities in the States.

There is currently lots of demands for software developers and they can easily have several job opportunities and can go far in negotiating their salaries. it's difficult for the company hiring process, but a very positive thing for all the employees.
