You're the troll here. Noticing Calgary's boomtown characteristics and commenting on them (the fascinating and striking contrast between an office tower that's taller than anything in Montreal, combined with built form of detached wooden shacks a mere few blocks away) is not trolling at all. This forum (dedicated to urban affairs) is meant for such discussion.

Neither Biff nor I were trolling with our (very similar) comments. The difference, if we must point it out, is that the Montrealers who responded to Biff are normal non-crazy people, therefore the discussion remained civil.

By contrast, my (now famous) wooden shack was in inner city Calgary. Makes all the difference (and I can't believe I have to explain this). A wooden shack in rural Quebec (or upstate NY) isn't anything special, while the same detached wooden shack in Midtown Manhattan (or downtown Mtl) would be unusual/exotic/noteworthy. If you refuse to understand this, you're truly being dumb on purpose.

Serious question: Who owns/runs SSP since Mike K left? Are there active moderators for this section? If so, why is the Montreal vs. Calgary Shack Attack dominating this thread for weeks on end? It's bizarre and unnecessary - I imagine the old man from the Simpsons wearing a Montreal Expos uniform, shaking his fist at the cloud and yelling "Why isn't your 130 year old city exactly the same as my 400 year old city!?"

There is this thing called private messages.

And this is the last time I shall speak of the Shack Attacks.

I created a thread for shack attacks, and it attracted some fun posts for awhile, but petered out. Outshacked, it would seem.

I think Phil McAvity (Victoria forumer) is the admin for SSP, since Dylan (creator of SSP) stepped down. Things ain't what they used to be. There has been a huge exodus of progressives from SSP. While they are still in the majority (not surprising given the remit of SSP), there has been an influx of trite-wingnuts.

There's a lot of moderation that's easy to miss because it's completely over the top stuff that just gets deleted (the clearest example being ads). Then there's the mushy grey area which is left alone most of the time.

I have noticed that SSP has shifted more and more toward political discussion over the years. Then again most of it's in dedicated threads so I am not sure how much it hurts, as long as it stays out of threads like this one. I'd imagine that mods in general would be on board with shifting moderation standards a bit in response to overall community desires. Right now moderation is pretty hands off in terms of guiding discussion topics (which is I think ideal unless there is a specific need to intervene to keep the whole thing from cratering due to bad actors). If you have a request you can PM a mod.

Been wondering this for years. It used to be mods would only delete certain voices and leave equally or more offensive/moronic voices like MX, Rousseau and Lio in tact, now they just don't give a fuck, that's why I started retaliating at these idiots about a year ago. The mods on here, at their absolute best, were never "moderate"... Harls, Leftcoaster, and the like.

It appears my attempts at satire were taken seriously. I thought the tip off would be the obviously photoshopped pastiche from Laval.

I thought my sarcastic hyperbole about Montreal being a slum would be obvious. For the record Montreal is Canada’s most urban city. Hands down. No other city has it’s density or character. Calgary is a boomtown. It boasts an impressive skyline with much room for growth in the inner city. There. Argument settled.

Wha-wha-wha-whaaaaat?! But, but... when you dig yourself into a hole on SSP you have Lio the fuck out of yourself, double down on your dumbass uneducated assertion, and never let it go even a month, 3 years, or 9 years later! Self awareness is not allowed!

I'm sorry. I honestly didn't mean to re-ignite the great shack debate (although had I thought for even a moment before posting I would have known that it was inevitable). I meant my post to just be a bit of tongue-in-cheek but really it probably turned out to just be trolling on my part. Bad Pavlov.

I believe that in the vertex of that angle, there are 2 towers presently under construction.

Forgive the crudeness of this analogy but I think it’s an apt one. Calgary is like a hot blonde with breast implants. She turns a lot of heads but lacks substance up close. Montreal is like a beautiful but classy brunette. Doesn’t turn as many heads from far away but up close she’s damn near perfect.

will you ever let things go? I am really tired of you constantly bringing me up when you get into a pissing match with another forumer.

I have made many contributions to SSP over the years, and I deeply resent your use of the term idiot, which could be grounds for suspension.

I think the analogy used to be Scarlet Johansson and Elizabeth Taylor. Young Beauty vs. Classic Substance. But now that Montreal is being infected with the blue glass condo craze as badly or worse than we have, don't think that holds up anymore.
