Agreed. These are well paying jobs and I suspect in addition to billeted students many local residents may choose to send their children as well.

I'm not negative, I just have first hand experience with these types of businesses, their target student market audience, and their overall business model and frankly, I don't think you understand how they really work. As I said, it is something, just not as groundbreaking and economically significant as you are making it out to be. They might provide some teaching jobs, but there are lots of controversial and complex socio-economic community challenges they have been known to bring with them. So I'm not going to jump up and down blindly praising Jesus and all the Saints like this is something as significant as the success of Cooke, new IBM jobs in Fredericton, the impact of an expanded Port of Saint John, or the potential Health Tech Campus at UNBSJ - as it isn't. That's all.

IDK I think increasing uptown's daytime population by 5-10% in what's currently a half abandoned mall surviving through a captive public sector tenant and half a dozen restaurants is an unalloyed good. Do we not want people with money spending it here? We need more higher-end for-profit projects, not just P3 stuff (I say this, doing P3 stuff myself). I'm just skeptical about how they can use the space given how odd it is.

I'm pretty sure I was told up thread that Saint John had about 13,000 people in Waterloo Village, Uptown, and the South End in the 50s. That fell to less than 7,000 a decade ago. We can handle a few dozen people from this.

Many will choose to live in Millidgeville (which had basically zero residents in 1950 and has 7,000 now), KV, and some will scatter elsewhere in the city or outlying areas.

Market Square posted a picture online an hour ago. Construction work has already begun for the Lycée International Français des Provinces Atlantiques.
Nice to see them jump right to work on it.

The port just posted some positive news online about the upcoming 2023 cruise season. It's set to be a record-breaking year. 84 ships are scheduled this season, (last year was 68), with the 1st one arriving on Sunday, May.7th. Around 15 double ship days and 5 triple ship days.

Saint John just landed the largest international seafood business conference.

Global Seafood Alliance's Responsible Seafood Summit will bring 500 seafood industry leaders from around the world to Saint John

This is only the second time this conference has been held in Canada. The conference will be held at The Delta Hotel from October 2nd to 5th, 2023.

149 Broad Street has hit the market. On realtor.ca in the description it says

It Is currently zoned RC with several meetings held with the City Of Saint John exploring the viability of a 5 story multi unit building at this location

As I'm typing this 78 St James Street is being demolished. 295 -305 Charlotte was just demolished last week. This is a pretty big open lot a stone's throw away from the planned K-8 school.

Reading in the TJ about the plans for St. John the Baptist Church housing project they said they are planning construction for this year with Brilliant Labs secured as tenant.

I’ve been told the two buildings that were demolished at St. James and Charlotte were bough by Victor Train. Bob McVicar seems to be teasing a potential new development coming to this block on his Facebook. I’m sensing the announcement of the K-8 school is driving some momentum in this area.

So counting up the projects for construction this year we have..

Completion of Loyalist Plaza
Completion of The Wellington
54-58 Broad Street - 38 units
166 Leinster - 35 units
I was told in Nov Steepleview was starting this spring which has 56
202 Waterloo Street - 45 unit

Which leaves Fundy Quay, 99 King, 194 Charlotte and the courthouse. One of which will for sure be breaking ground I chose not to include QSN based on the information someone provided on here about the lease of the business on site.

I heard they are starting this summer, which as you know means nothing lol. The opposite side of the square was supposed to start last summer, and that’s still an empty lot
