Amazing what we have to surmise without expropriation records, or plans, or winning bidders, or .......

Interesting!
This one was on the list to be expropriated and in the original EA as property the City needed to purchase. I think we are supposed to get an update on the Station Oriented Development negotiations as part of the Stage 2 contract award next month.

Good Day.

Ah so..... missed that one. Got it.
I knew they were going for it for the RoW, but not for the full "facilitate".
Thx.

Baseline Station will be renamed "Algonquin Station". About time!

Yeah the SJAM needs some sort of redo. It is hard to drive, somewhat of a barrier to the waterfront and not all that heavily used!

Agreed. If we are going to rename LeBreton to Pimisi, Baseline should certainly be renamed Algonquin, both for the collage and in recognition of the land.

Absolutely. I also believe that Dominion station should be renamed Kitchissippi.

+1. I would also rename Westboro to either Athlone or Tweedsmuir, given that Dominion (to be renamed Kitchissippi hopefully ) also serves Westboro village. I'm not sure which is better suited. Tweedsmuir is a much longer street than Athlone, but the name Athlone is shorter and its spelling/pronunciation is more intuitive. (I live on Tweedsmuir Avenue and I constantly have to tell people how it's spelt whenever I'm giving out my address on the phone for whatever reason).

I don't know. I like the name Dominion. Not only is it named after the nearest street, but it plays homage to our country, The Dominion of Canada, which seems appropriate for the Confederation Line.

And Kitchissippi is easy to spell? Tweedsmuir may not be easy to spell correctly, but it isn't so strange that you would have troubles finding it.

I don't have a problem with the name Westboro (we would have several stations in Kitchissippi Ward (or somewhat near the Ottawa River if you use that reference), so I don't see the conflict), but if we did want to rename it, why not name it Kitchissippi?

I completely disagree with that. It is the main station that serves Westboro Village and should thus remain Westboro Station. Very few people travelling to that station are going specifically to Athlone or Tweedsmuir, so it does nothing in terms of improving intuitive wayfinding for most users.

I like Dominion as well.
Oh well, changing names seems to mollify folks instead of doing the difficult work required to bring about real change.

Alright you have a point. I didn't think thank my wish would interfere with the big long term decisions that need to be made.

That is a good point. It is the primary station for those going to Westboro village. The average person wouldn't know that Athlone or Tweedsmuir are in Westboro.

Dominion is a bit different as it is primarily used by those living nearby. Besides, I don't see Kitchissippi as being any better at helping you figure out if it is the station you want.

As has been discussed in the past, I would rather see it moved a bit further west, but those using it would complain louder than those who would benefit from the move.

Wouldn't Dominion, now that it will be an actual station and not just a glorified bus stop, become the primary station for Westboro Village?

A better station to take on the name Kitchissippi might be the currently named Cleary. Since it's a new station and most people don't know about Cleary the avenue, it might be a good opportunity to honour the area's indigenous heritage without confusing riders. Arguably, Kitchissippi would be more descriptive for many than Cleary anyway.

I doubt it. Dominion Ave. is a small residential street on the western most edge of Westboro (in fact Dominion station technically in Westboro) and is probably not the preferred route for people to walk to the Village. Westboro station is in the centre of the village (from and east/west perspective) and has bus transfers for those who don't want to walk.

Possibly. The station is on the western edge of the ward, but it is probably the closest to the River (it is the Algonquin name for the Ottawa River).

.

Not really. Westboro station is at the eastern edge. When you consider the deadzone that the Superstore & Otto's Suburu creates, the retail strip of Westboro village doesn't really start until Tweedsmuir Avenue, which is the street that lines up with Westboro station.

Interesting. I guess it depends who's definition you use. I was using the boundary Google gave (which is also mentioned in Wikipedia), which has Island Park Drive as the eastern boarder and the Ottawa River as the northern boarder, kind of zig zags on the west and uses Carling/417 to the south (see https://goo.gl/maps/1zZSzWiz81R2)

However, according to the Westboro Community Association the boundary is "East of Denbury, West of Tweedsmuir, and between Carling and the Transitway," so significantly different.

So you wouldn't consider BUSHTUKAH to be in Westboro? From a retail perspective, I would say Golden Ave would be the western edge.

The way I see it as a local, is that going west, Westboro starts at Tweedsmuir.

I base this on the streetscape. The section between Tweedsmuir and Island Park is kind of dead/ugly; Bushtakah has that big parking lot around it and that dull grey exterior that makes it more like a strip mall than an urban retailer, and the Superstore, Otto's, and LCBO all create a deadspace on the sidewalk. Westboro's distinctive streetscape, with the small stores, "streetwall" of buildings against the sidewalk and active frontage, starts at Tweedsmuir.

As someone who grew up in Westboro - before the superstore or even MEC were there - it always felt like the Churchill/Richmond intersection was the neighbourhood's focal point, which is closer to Westboro station than Dominion.

Here are a couple other stations that could use a name change outside the four we've mentioned;
  • Place d'Orléans and/or Orléans Boulevard. Having stations which such similar names could confuse anyone not familiar with the system and the area. Place d'Orléans should theoretically get priority since it is a landmark and hence better know. Verdict, maybe name the Orléans Boulevard station Convent Glen for the neighborhood to the south.
  • Montréal Station. For one thing, everyone associates Montréal Road with Vanier, not this part of town. This is also the point where Montréal becomes St-Joseph. I would recommend Beacon Hill Station instead.
  • Better name for Queensview? Maybe IKEA? Baxter? Queensway Terrace? Citizen?
  • Pinecrest is just before the street changes to Greenbank. I'd recommend Foster or Dumaurier. Maybe not Dumaurier. Love the name but ruined by cancer sticks.
