Ever wonder how Google knows about traffic jams so quickly? It's not like people are directly reporting those things. Android(Google) phones track all sorts of things, including the GPS location.

I assume bus riders with smartphones is what confused Google - it must be setup to assume the ramp was open to drivers as well.

Percy Street delayed again..

Residents restless over not-so-rapid bridge replacement

Chair of transportation committee says 2nd attempt to replace bridge also delayed

"The rapid bridge replacement on Highway 417 over Percy Street in Ottawa is proving not so rapid and residents who live nearby are growing restless as they deal with increased traffic on their normally quiet street.

The Ministry of Transportation (MTO) was expected to complete the replacement between Aug. 10 and Aug. 14, but postponed the project at the last minute. Another attempt scheduled for the last weekend in September has also been delayed, according to Coun. Tim Tierney, who chairs Ottawa's transportation committee.

Highway 417 closure postponed until further notice

"It's actually crickets," Tierney said, describing the communication the city has had with MTO."

And absolutely no reason given... is the city doing anything to follow-up or pressure MTO?

Heard from a friend on the project that they've been unable to get the necessary police staffing for the closures since police have to be stationed at some of the intersections.

Seriously? They had hundreds of cops siting on their rear-ends making bank during the "Freedom" convoy, but they can't get a couple cops for a weekend bridge closure. Or, you know, cones? By-law? Kids with flags? The community members would probably be happy to volunteer.

Highway 417 bridge replacement at Percy Street re-scheduled to begin Oct. 19
Eastbound and westbound closures of the highway through central Ottawa will start at 8 p.m. on Oct. 19 and are expected to end by 6 a.m. on Oct. 24.

New dates have been set for the replacement of the Highway 417 bridge over Percy Street in Ottawa.

Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation said in a release Friday that it had confirmed with contractor Kiewit Dufferin Midtown Partnership (KDMP) that the work would take place between Thursday, Oct. 19, and Tuesday, Oct. 24.

Starting at 8 p.m. on Oct. 19, Highway 417 will be closed eastbound from Carling to Metcalfe and westbound from Metcalfe to Bronson from 8 p.m. Those lanes are expected to reopen by 6 a.m. on Oct. 24.

The project to replace the eastbound and westbound bridges at Percy Street was originally scheduled for mid-August, but the work was postponed with only a few hours of advance notice, and the Ministry of Transportation provided no reason for the delay.

(That was also the day heavy storms dumped as much as 70 millimetres of rain on some neighbourhoods in six hours, swamping parts of Ottawa and causing flooding and power outages.)

The bridge replacement, part of the province’s $425-million spending on bridges and highways in the Ottawa area, was then rescheduled for Sept. 28 to Oct. 2, but that, too, was cancelled without a stated reason.

Mayor Mark Sutcliffe said in September he didn’t know what was causing the delay in the project.

“It’s a provincial government bridge and a provincial government highway, so it’s not our decision,” Sutcliffe told reporters.

I never saw anything in the media that investigated this comment that it was defective work delaying approval for the replacement.

If that is the case, then we should have some indication from the MTO that the work is done, approved, and just awaiting a date when law enforcement is available to redirect the traffic off the highway.

Sections of the Queensway to close Thursday for bridge replacement, detours in place until Tuesday

Staff Reporter, Ottawa Citizen
Published Oct 18, 2023 • Last updated 1 minute ago • 1 minute read

Motorists, get ready for detours.

Starting Thursday evening, a section of Highway 417 will be closed in both directions to allow for a “rapid” bridge replacement over Percy Street.

Beginning at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 19, eastbound lanes between Carling/Kirkwood and Metcalfe, as well as westbound lanes between Metcalfe/Catherine and Bronson, will be closed until around 6 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 24. Lane reductions and ramp closures are scheduled to begin an hour before the full closure, at 7 p.m on Thursday.

The following highway access ramps will be closed during the replacement work: O’Connor westbound, Lyon westbound (ongoing), Maitland eastbound, Carling eastbound and Parkdale eastbound.

“The replacement timeline has been extended beyond the usual Monday reopening to accommodate any fall weather that could impact concrete and paving work,” the city said in a news release last week.

Detours in both directions will be in effect during the closure.

Motorists going westbound will have to exit the highway at Metcalfe/Catherine, continue westbound on Catherine Street, and return to the highway via the Bronson westbound access ramp.

Those going eastbound will have to exit the highway at Carling/Kirkwood, continue eastbound on Carling Avenue, turn right on Bronson Avenue, take a ramp to eastbound Riverside Drive, continue eastbound on Riverside Drive, and then return to the highway via the Riverside eastbound access ramp (just before the 417 bridge).

The project to replace the eastbound and westbound bridges at Percy Street had been scheduled for Aug. 10-14, but the work was postponed with only a few hours’ advance notice.

Part of the province’s $425-million spending on bridges and highways in the Ottawa area, the Percy Street project was then rescheduled for Sept. 28-Oct. 2, though that plan was also scrapped.

How long will they lose the Commerce High soccer fields? Will it overlap with the loss of Plouffe Park?

I have to admit; it looks to me as if they are currently just standing around the new Percy overpass waiting for concrete to cure.

It looked to me as if the new footings for the new bridge structures were INSIDE the previous abutments. Does anyone know if the new spans are shorter than the old ones? If so, that would leave less room for road-lanes and sidewalks under the bridge.

Also, the new structures’ decks appear to still need to be further widened. The structures’ walls extend further than the deck, but not as far out as the existing ramp walls. It looks strange. Can anyone shed any light on this?

My understanding is that the new footings are slightly inside the previous ones. The bridge is a similar width, but is designed to sit on the new abutments, sometimes with a bit of a cantilever at the base. There's a limit to the number of times these rapid replacements can be done before everything has to be dug up, but luckily that's not common.

The new span is a bit shorter than the old one, the previous bridge was a bit oversized for its purposes, the new shorter span still has room for two
2.2 and 2.4 metre sidewalks, a 3m bi-directional cycleway, a 2.2 metre blvd and an absolutely massive 5 metre southbound lane (To note that about 40 years ago the northbound lane was removed).

Myself personally am a bit disappointed they didn't take the opportunity to widen the cycleway a bit, especially since they found the room for such a wide lane. But this one is the least of my concerns compared to all the other bridges of this project which didn't get any improvements.

As for the wall question, my complete guess is maybe for light posts? not sure why they would have more expanded to do on the structure, especially since this was a three segment bridge compared to all the others at two.

The 5m lane is probably for the event of an accident or disabled vehicle.

Renfrew? Juicy.
Something like that probably goes into my TCH thread in the provincial section (which is pretty dead since a certain member has been banned).
