Condor has been having financial trouble for years. It appears they’re abandoning most long haul services to focus on short haul flights within Europe.

PDX monthly traffic report for April is out. April was the first partial month of Alaska's new banked schedule.

In April '25, Alaska mainline was up 11.3% over April '24. Hawaiian was up 9.2% and Horizon was up 94.5%.

Year-to-Date, Alaska is up 25.9%, Hawaiian down 1.1% and Horizon up 21%.

Also, Alaska mainline passenger numbers are now higher than April 2019, as are Hawaiian's numbers. Horizon is still down, though the 95% increase puts the numbers a lot closer to where they were pre-pandemic. Alaska Airlines Group + Skywest combined numbers are now just over where they were in April 2019, but we can't tell from the Port's statistics whether all of the Skywest increase is from Alaska flying or not.

Wow that’s an insane increase for Horizon. Definitely showing the results of the beefed up hub schedule, and also just how much regional connections were depleted post-Covid if Horizon is just now approaching 2019 levels. Overall PDX passenger traffic is up 7.7%April ‘25 vs. April ‘24.

I think horizon is flying more regional jets than they used to as well. Seemed like for many years they flew most turboprops and only in 2016 did they move to start buying embraer regional jets. Likely some bigger Alaska strategy, so best to look at combined numbers for Alaska+Horizon.

From an Oregonian article today (about Horizon delaying acceptance of two Embraers, due to tarrifs):

In 2016, Horizon had 52 Q400 turboprops, and Skywest had 15 E175 jets flying for Alaska (plus a handful of other aircraft). So the fleet has grown a solid amount as they replaced the turboprops.

Yeah the turbo props are completely gone now from Alaska’s fleet, as far as I’m aware. There’s a nostalgia to them since i’ve spent most of my life flying around the PNW on those.. but I don’t miss them. I never liked sitting next to the prop blocking the view out the window, and it took up a decent section of the aircraft, ha!

But they were all first class! (I'm not sure if the jets are)....I recall sitting in the back row back in college going to visit my parents, sat next to a Horizon employee on their way home. She informed me it's all 1st class, and the two of us proceeded to drink 2 large bottles of free local beer (they carried special local beers too). Needless to say it was a fun 40 minute flight PDX to PSC.

Looking forward to seeing the full renovation. It looks great now, but when the other half of the retail areas open up, and the temporary concourse detour is removed to open up the views and eliminate the long treks, it’ll be an awesome facility. My husband and I spent a couple hrs in the Alaska Lounge in the north satellite at Sea Tac a couple years ago, and it’s such a nice place to watch the planes and be away from the crowds. PDX will finally have a great lounge to match the rest of the airport soon.

The lounge at the N-gates in Seattle is especially nice, and I assume that's what Alaska will be aiming for in Portland. Once it opens I'm going to have find a way to book a flight that gives me access.

And, as an aside, after visiting both this week: the Escape Lounge at PDX is far nicer than The Club at SEA, in every aspect (design, food, drinks, views, service). For those using Priority Pass, PDX has definitely overtaken SEA.

Salem is losing Avelo service (they are shutting down all west coast ops). Best I can find was maybe 29,000 pax last year. Presumably will shift to PDX for most trips.

Screw 'em. They faced significant backlash for operating deportation flights under a contract with the Trump administration. The contract involves transporting migrants to detention centers both within and outside the United States.

I guess I meant the demand will shift to PDX, not the airline. Which looks like it shutting down?

Avelo is shutting down their west coast operations entirely. Breeze is now expanding and picking up a bunch of Avelo's dropped routes (including to Redmond/Bend), but so far not to Salem.

Salem worked really hard to bring commercial air traffic back to SLE so I would be surprised if another airline doesn't pick it up. According to online chatter, people who utilized Avelo for SLE flights commented that the planes were almost always full or close to full.
