Thank you Harry and FVN for the explanation, so does that mean this building will be steel pile driven foundation and not caissons? Like we saw at Union West? Why choose one over the other? -Thanks

Lastly, rgarri your renderings (while fantastic) echo the reality that Carbide and Carbon will be overtaken from many views. I am a proponent for development so I'm not complaining but I will say as C+C is my favorite building in the city, that's something that'll take a long time to get used to.

Yes piles, not piers. 160 or so of those beams driven to hardpan, about 110' down.

Piles support (primarily) with friction on their sides, Piers by sitting on something. Caissons are the tubes used to hold the hole open while the piers are installed.

Pile foundations seem to be common in South Loop projects because the South Branch of the river meandered all over that area over the millennia, and left the South Loop with siltier soil than the rest of downtown.

I also went by 717 yesterday afternoon, hoping to see in operation the vibratory sheet pile driver I'd been hearing this week. All finished with those, alas, but I saw this sitting on the ground and kept trying to think what kind of unearthly material could make a cylinder this size weigh 1000 tons. Unobtainium? Cartoon anvils from the Acme catalog?

Since I couldn't see the fittings, I never thought of it being a jack.

I think it's interesting that the other 7 pilings have sufficient friction that they wouldn't rise as the test column is being pushed down. I guess that's also part of what they're looking at.

I'm not surprised that it blends in with the crowd. There are so many 500+ ft buildings on nearly every side of this one. The thing I enjoy about the proposal is activating the street presence along Michigan and Water. Hardly anyone will ever bother to look up.

It's definitely time for an SSP Chicago meetup! Especially given there are at least two long-time forumers who are now in Chicago, namely myself as well as my good friend/forumer who's moving up here from the Houston exurbs!

I think it's just some kind of abstract sculptural element. It's a lot more interesting than the Morris Adjmi knockoff, former design for the parking level they were planning before, although I think the new design is a wash overall since the curtain wall is now a lot more generic.

The material could be wood, but even the most durable wood will soon weather to a silver-gray color in our climate, so hopefully it's not that. That color could really be many things... would be awesome if it is a nice brick or terra cotta, though.
