Interesting article on Salt Lake getting another pro team:

https://www.sltrib.com/sports/jazz/2...am-utah-smith/

Problem is, it says little. There's no real substance to what could be the pro team, though I think the article is suggesting it'll likely be a NHL or MLB team. Even then, no timeframe is given. So, we could be looking at 10 or 20 years.

Basically a filler article but interesting regardless.

If they do, I just hope they name what ever new pro team we get to something that's actually relevant to the state of Utah or Salt Lake City. It's too late to change the Utah "Jazz" name as it has grown with us and built its history with us. Blew a big opportunity when they named our Major League Soccer team to "Real" Salt Lake, that name sounds like an obvious generic cheap knock-off of Real Madrid and the other Spanish teams; the name tells me that we in Utah are unoriginal, trite, and unimaginative.

So, the rumor I just heard is that Ryan Smith is looking to acquire another time and move it and the Jazz to Sandy

Haha no they just spent a ton to renovate the arena. They won't move for awhile.

Yeah. I don't see that happening. Especially after they got the city to kick in $22 million for renovations, though that was part of Miller deal for the initial renovations.

I just don't see Smith abandoning the city for a suburban NBA stadium. But if he does, I'll probably be done with the Jazz for good.

The article makes a very good case for why it's unlikely that we'd get an NHL or MLB team for a long time, as other cities have been waiting for longer and have more organization in place. But at least it gets the ball rolling.

I personally don't really care if we ever get another pro team, but it would be cool.

I would suggest knocking down the Bank of the West Building first prior to incorporating buildings further east for a tower like this.

Is it even incorporating the building or just using the facade like the ZCMI Center did all those years ago? If it's the latter, it'll look cheap and will prove yet another example of Salt Lake destroying the fabric of the city. Seriously, I don't know what is going on here but holy shit there's hundreds of better locations to build - either vacant or with building stock not worth saving.

We could start by building something on the giant courthouse parking lot. Wish I knew what the vision was for that. So much potential

Visible demo work on the old state offices.

Interior work at the moment, they've taken out a few windows and a significant chunk of the eastern wall. Does anyone have the renders of the building going here?

Here's a view from the southwest, only sign anything is happening from this angle is the fencing.

Thanks for keeping up with that Paniolo Man. Here's the rendering of the new offices and museum from the Compilation Thread, with your photos added. Glad they're making a solid statement with the design and mimicking the beauty of the original structure. I've noticed when googling for critics lists of America's most beautiful States Capitols that Utah is always in the top 10. This is going to make for a beautiful Campus and give Salt Lake a stellar museum addition.

Update - Ancillary offices on the State Capitol Campus to be demoed. New offices, museum imminent.

SALT LAKE CITY — Plans are moving forward to build a new state history museum and increase security on Capitol Hill.

The Capitol Preservation Board and architects are finishing designs for the new Museum of Utah, a multi-million dollar facility to replace the old State Office Building and data center that sit north of the Capitol building itself.
Demolition will start this summer.

The design, which will closely mirror the existing Capitol, will also include an area for tour buses to come in and a plaza for people to enjoy

A segment of the article:
QUOTE:
...The Utah Legislature is working to fund a new seismically sound five-story, 151,535 square-foot building just north of the Utah Capitol that would give Utah's historic artifacts collection the permanent home that state historians have
requested for years. In addition to the museum, the building plan calls for a new conference center, office space, 400 parking stalls, and electric vehicle charging stations.

However, its most distinctive feature is the space set aside for a state history museum and history collection area, It's a building that will give Utahns a chance to see pieces of the state's past they may have never seen before. Jennifer Ortiz,
the director of the Utah Division of State History, is excited about that prospect, calling Utah's history collection "truly incredible."

"It's such an incredible opportunity — a once-in-a-generation opportunity," she told KSL.com. "To get to participate in thinking about how we can highlight the state's history and the collections is really just a beautiful gift that we can give to
the state and to Utahns."

The massive project will replace the aging and abandoned State Office Building that was constructed over 60 years ago. The old building is slated to be torn down in mid-August, according to Jim Russell, the director of the Utah Division of
Facilities and Construction Management. Construction of the new building should begin in the fall.

The entire project is estimated to cost $219 million, with $110 million coming over from money saved from the construction of the new Utah State Prison, Russell said. Gov. Spencer Cox has requested that $85 million go toward the North
Capitol project, with another $7 million in ongoing funds, according to his 2023 budget. As of Monday, SB6, the legislative bill that covers all sorts of infrastructure and general government spending, lists $68 million toward the project.

It's unclear whether the proposed funds in SB6 would complete the remaining cost of the project.

There are also economic variables that can change the total cost of the project.

"Of course, we are concerned with the continued escalation of the construction market due to labor and material shortages," Russell added, in an email to KSL.com.

Still, the new building is now projected to open in either late 2025 or early 2026 — about 12 to 18 months later than originally anticipated because of earthquake mitigation work that is expected to lengthen the project timeline, Ortiz said.

The delay, however, puts the building right on track to open just in time for a major nationwide celebration...

Sounds like the agreement between the University of Utah and the RDA regarding the Station Center "Innovation District" might be dead. Really unfortunate, imo.

There's some construction updates for the Depot District in the article though.

380 S West Temple, which is a 10-story hotel, was given unanimous approval for a height increase by the PC at the meeting last night. The taller tower (390 S West Temple) is confirmed at 28 stories (not 25) and it seems to me that the design has been value-engineered a bit over the last two years since we first saw it. The parking podium, which provides parking for both the hotel and apartments, is really obvious and ugly imo. Otherwise, this will be a great addition to the skyline and a nice mixed-use project in the most barren part of downtown. The hotel has a ground floor restaurant and a rooftop bar. I think the apartment tower also has a commercial space.

They did show a new piece of unreleased eye candy at the meeting (screen capture):

I noticed that the developer also updated their website and the project has a new name: "Soren". Another new rendering there:

Digging through the website, I found a newer version of the "context" rendering.

In other news, the PC approved the Lotus Alchemy project and forwarded a positive recommendation to the city council for some height and design standard revisions for downtown zoning districts. If the council passes that into law (date TBD), some notable changes are that design review will now be triggered at 200 ft for D-1 and the maximum height of buildings in the Depot District will be doubled to 180 ft. There's a bunch of other changes too, which you can read about here.

Nice! Will both be under construction at the same time? Any timeline on when they expect to begin?

No details on this were given but I'd expect it to be relatively soon. It seems that the building permits were being held up in planning so I'd expect them to start construction on both buildings when the permits are finally issued.

There has been some movement recently on the portal for the Theatre Tower too. Maybe we will see the building permits for that project submitted soon. We could have four 25+ story buildings under construction before the end of the year: Astra (40), Theatre (31), Worthington (31), and Soren (28).

I know some folks at IHG and can verify the 2nd Kimpton is a GO. As in they are already spending shit tons of cash. Also glad we have one of our "Wall" towers running east to west for a change! Gonna be huge for downtown. This kind of mixed use is bread-and-butter in other cities.

I am not worried about the look of the parking portion of the Soren. It is the most easily updated portion for the future. Value build now but can be easily updated with greenery, screening, or a combination of the 2 in a few years as the area sees more development.

This should be relatively cheap, especially as it looks like it would only be the West Temple and 4th South portions that would need updating. If it isn't in place, the extension of Trax along 4th South may encourage the updating along the 4th South portion.

I am stoked about this project for downtown! What a huge improvement to a vacant lot that has been nothing but a weed patch for what seems like a decade.

I think the parking podium is atrocious. Not fond of the rest of it either.

I like the hotel though. Rooftop bar sounds lovely.
