a lot of the buildings in that area are old and "heritage" and we don't have much stock of that so i think they will stay

Yeah, there are short buildings there - along Howe (aross from Pacific Centre) and Hornby (across from YWCA) mid-block just north of Dunsmuir. It would be nice to see something straddle the alley, but neither Howe nor Hornby are the major streets for higher buildings.

Outside the higher buildings zone - See page 38:

If they keep a lot of the older, brick, "heritage" buildings for the sake of history, very good, but it would be great to see something creative done with them; indoor malls, arcades .... I don't know what, but something more interesting than leaving them as simply old but functional buildings with little interest other than that they are old and therefore "heritage."

I love those streets! They don't need tall buildings, it is a really interesting mesh of 8 to 15 story buildings ranging from what seems to be 100 to 30 years old. They are mostly abutted right against one and other. In fact some of those areas remind me of Tokyo, short, slender buildings, some of them with office like glass walls, making a very urban feel.

I want to see tall buildings in Van, but can we please, please tear down Sears for such a cause before these buildings?

Booooo, Grand & Toy. They have a wonderful habit of delivering office supplies to the wrong location and then denying it even happened - until you give up and shut up. Baaad.

^wow, could you be a bit lazier? You used so many shortcuts in what you posted, it was actually hard to understand what you were saying. I still don't know what "sth" is, as in, "this city feels like sth which is ironic".....

Whew, I'm glad it wasn't just me. I was afraid I was getting really old!

What struck me about Delirium's excellent shots is how new Vancouver is. Almost nothing (other than the Hotel Georgia) appeared to be over 40 years old. I'm glad the old hotel was saved, too bad we lost Hotel Vancouver II as a counterpoint.

Just based on the "4 million+ feel"

Can anyone translate Hipster (or ESL student) to English?
I tried using Google Translate, but the result wasn't any better.

I'd have an easier time reading this if it was in french...

whew! ...... sorry? We lost the Hotel Vancouver II as a counterpoint? Are you referring to the ORIGINAL, first-built Hotel Vancouver, or the "newer" one on Georgia and Burrard?
.... I was afraid they had knocked THAT one (the present one) down, because that IS HV II. Maybe you mean the Hotel Vancouver I. Am I correct?

Personally, although I know it was old, and very much a heritage building, the former Hotel Vancouver (in pictures only) always had a "clumsiness" about the way it looked. I think the current Hotel Vancouver is sleeker, if you can call it that.
What really peeved me off was the demolition of the Birk's Building, only to be replaced by a rather charmless tower, and a giant drug store underneath. Keeping the Birk's Building (and redoing the inside) would have kept some Edwardian heritage to the area.

Until fairly recently, in Vancouver "old" = BAD, "new" = GOOD. There were plans to demolish Christ Church Cathedral several decades back, and replace it with a geometric Arthur Erickson creation. (... and Jesus wept.)

This is the second hotel Vancouver, the one where TD tower is now

The one standing today is the third hotel Vancouver.

Yep, the restrained classicism of the Hotel Georgia would have been nicely set off by the riotous Edwardian architecture of Hotel Vancouver II. Check out the terracotta moose and elk heads:

My photo today - this tower is starting to look really long as the glazing creeps up to the top - too bad it's obstructed from so many angles.

That looks cool... That used to be in our city???

Wish city-builders back then were more creative. At the very least that could have been a nice facade for a skyscraper podium. Ohwell.

anyways,

sth = something

hc= harbour center

anyways, i thought u guys would've guessed, but certainly it was hard...maybe too hard for some

j/k

anyways, the whole thing is about how vancouver looks like a big city from a certain perspective. if you leave that perspective, you see the truth.
