Totally agreed about the base. I'm not 100% opposed to parking pedestals, but that is just lazy work.

Oh holy shit! I didn't even notice the orange section of the building. No idea how I missed that – not into it at all. Very dated looking.

It looks like the initial phase of the new Holiday Inn Express in downtown Pittsburgh has started. The small building standing on the property has been mostly demolished. Hopefully , work will start soon on the hotel after demo is complete.

In re: Burns & Scalo site... I say no good... in a Larry David voice.

The glass is cool but the back portion just reminds me of the cool copper color we could have had with The Gardens but were ultimately deprived of. Regardless, the fact that we have a proposal on this site is enough to excite me. I just hope the powers that be produce a more pleasing design.

Some of the project description feels like they wrote it in another language and then used an online translator to see what they could come up with.

Whiskey Barrel Flats is dead, which is a bummer:

However, assuming Forest City implements its plans for Station Square, and perhaps the River Walk Corporate Center gets a refresh, then I think that bridge area (pun intended) will get infilled. Hopefully that building still gets preserved at that point.

I've been involved in a somewhat similar project of trying to put condos and/or apartments in a historic building and it's really really hard to get the money to work for projects like that. The costs involved in renovating an old industrial building that's been sitting empty for generations and figuring out how to make enough money from either renting or selling the units to pay for the work is difficult at best.

^ That's usually the issue -- not deep enough pockets to make the investment knowing that the project will likely not break even for years.

While it's great that people with some money have interest in renovating properties, they most often solely see it as an additional income source and get scared off real quick once they realize that larger scale real estate investment is not for the conservative. That's the problem with everyone wanting to be a "developer". It sounds good to them in theory and they think it'll be quick, easy money... and then they are confronted with reality.

I see it all the time with groups of doctors, especially, who make some good cash and then think they are real estate entrepreneurs. They usually end up selling at a loss and decide to just buy some rental apartments or condos in FLA.

Yeah, I was always told in real estate development, the key is to be playing with someone else's money (and don't give up security interests or guarantees of your own).

Theft aside, playing with someone else's money is pretty much always a good thing. I need to find some of that.
