Southern Company announced Wednesday that it will open what it is calling an
Energy Innovation Center in Midtown Atlanta’s Technology Square.
The company, which has its headquarters about a mile to the south, said in a press release that in coming months the hub “will look for better, more reliable and more efficient ways to increase value for customers through products and services.”
It did not immediately disclose how many staffers might be stationed there or whether it expects to create new jobs soon as part of the effort.
Southern chairman and chief executive Tom Fanning was quoted in the release as saying, “It is through cutting-edge innovation – solutions that improve our lives every day – that we can create better, more efficient ways to deliver power and help solve some of the challenges our customers face.”
Southern officials have said the company is particularly aggressive in areas of new research compared to others in the utility industry.
The company said in its latest release that it will seek partnerships with Southeastern universities and other partners.
