I mean...even a flaming mass of tires would look better.

Seriously, the building is shaping up well. Wait until it's done to cast the stones (please do not literally toss stones).

I'd buy that for a dollar.

It's better looking than I expected. That box isn't so hot but good overall.

I think it looks great even without comparing it to the old cladding

I think the decision to go with that cladding on the protruding boxes is a disappointment given the excellent choices made for the rest of the scheme.

^ agreed. if only the spandrel was a darker shade, the box would be more prominent. but is James cheng, he loves that damn sea foam green.

Was the elevator core perhaps moved, then? That's another thing the market seems to be suggesting.

Pic by me today.

New office elevator core should be in the opening at the bottom of the pic -
but I don't see cut-outs in the floors below (there also hasn't been an application to the City to reloacte elevators)
Temporary structure being built over old mech penthouse.

Is it maybe a bit premature to judge how the box looks before the Nordstrom floors are decked out? I mean the spandrel might look less out of place next to whatever cladding the department store is planning to use. Why must we always judge things before they are done?

Looks as though this is a solar panel installation.

It very well may be, but the angle of the panels aren't ideal. They should be tilted more towards the south. 45 to 49° is more ideal for Vancouver,

No, the core cannot be moved, it's already been cut into the structure and the entire lobby is based around it being in the NW corner. it's really the only sensible place it put it all things considered.

Because construction is a slow moving process and we get bored in the middle bits

Come to think of it - that's right - they've done a lot of reinforcing in the undergound parkade - so it would be tough to move at the last minute.

I thought tht it's for a plastic tent to keep the area warm in winter for workers. We'll know soon enough. Looks the same today - no plastic.

I thought I saw the cut-outs in the floors for the new elevator core when I was standing at London Drugs waiting for the bus today.

and also the street grid downtown is about 45° from the rest of the city too.

Thanks - maybe they are working from bottom to top (and using the top floor for temporary staging)

*Edit

Totally disagree, the pre-modification EATON'S was far better on the corner of Robson and Howe than the 'Sears eaton's experiment' changes. it was architecturally unified and cohesive with the rest of the building, far more balanced and pleasing. The black blade-sign aligned with the edge of the black glass entry. The bevelled edge was elegant and classy. Few complained when EATON'S was the tenant, they took immaculate care of the building, it was always spotless and very white!... quite striking in it's day especially before the 1980 'cap' style addition of the 6th and 7th floors.

Interesting that in the 1980s pic showing the rooftop addition the construction trailers were above the parking ramps - as they are now for this reno.

The blank walls also had functioning display windows - the long horizontal ones. They were made non-functional in the circa 1999 eaton's reno.

I think the Nordstrom reno will make that block of Howe worse than it was before, as there won't be a store entrance except at the corner with Robson. There will I think be an entrance to the office lobby through the vestibule, but not to the store.
