Unhappy people? I've never met any unhappy person in the US. In France you meet a lot. What's great about the US is the positivity of people, even when they are in dire straits.
Also, yes some houses and neighborhoods in the US are deplorable, worse than in the developed part of Europe (US does things in the extreme, it's either extremely good or extremely bad), but by and large US houses are far better, more comfortable, and full of little devices and gadgets than European houses (especially French houses which I find terribly neglected in general).
Another thing that has always shocked me in the US is the quality of their beds and mattresses. Far superior to what we have here. I've had some of my best sleeps in the US.
