Vic is beautiful but the traffic is horrendous there now. The town has lost it's charm in many ways. Still, great views all around.

Or underground like many western cities did 70 years ago. Even relatively poor cities in Eastern Europe have underground electrical. That Canadian cities can't accomplish this continues to baffle me. I guess Canadians grow up with it so don't think it's fine. It looks horrible not to mention '3rd world' for lack of a better description.

I grew up in Richmond (metro Van) and most areas had power lines on the street, I didn't even notice neighbourhoods that had it vs. those that didn't until I came on this forum years ago. But yes now that I'm conscious of it, it makes a world of difference

Honestly, I didn't even notice the power lines in the Victoria photos and I've never noticed them when I've been there. I don't even know if Vancouver has above ground power lines. Seems like a complete non issue to me.

But then, I grew up in Toronto so maybe I'm just used to them.

I am used to buried power I guess, having grown up in Alberta and living in Edmonton now. I am glad the lines are all buried here, though I do miss the old trolley bus overhead power lines that we used to have until the buses were decommissioned in 2009.

For a very small stretch, yes.

They're even front and centre in the photo posted just below the Vic set:

I for one don't see the issue with above grade power lines. As long as they are well maintained and kept neat and tidy they look nothing like their 3rd world counterparts where patching into the mainline is the responsibility of the resident, hence the messy junctions all over the system.

Barf. I hated those old trolly bus wires - good riddance I say.

The reason those power lines run along that portion of Jasper Ave is because there is no alley, since the edge of the river valley ie immediately behind (south) of those buildings. Once the alleys start again, the power lines disappear within them (either buried or not).

Pic from Obstructed. From a high-rise apartment on Bronson, looking west. Before and after the new tower's construction. Second pic includes new tallest on the right.

Same here. I spent my first 11 years in London. Overhead power lines were only something you saw in periphery places. You won't see it in the central city or affluent neighbourhoods. What shocked me most about Toronto was that not only can you find overhead downtown but some of the posts were made of wood. It always comes across as back woods primitive to me. 20 years on, I don't think I'll ever get used to it.
