Nah, Majesta/Royale is based in Moncton.

Mayor Dawn Arnold of Moncton even cracked during the panic buying at the beginning of the pandemic that "at least we have our own toilet paper plant".

FWIW - Irving Personal Care is based in Moncton too - it makes adult diaper products.

The plant you're thinking of was the Irving pulp and paper plant scenically situated overlooking the Reversing Falls. In the old days, it had a particularly pungent aroma which used to waft over the uptown of Saint John, thanks to the prevailing winds. Thankfully they installed scrubbers in the early 1990s, so that isn't a problem any more.......

So out of curiosity, does Irving make the pulp in SJ and then ship that to Moncton to further process into toilet paper? Or are they totally separate things? I've always been fascinated with the way NB functions.

I'm sure that's the situation. Same thing with the Irving Personal Care plant in Moncton too. One thing about the Irving corporate empire is that they take vertical integration to the extreme. They keep everything in house until it is time to wholesale their product to the retailer.

1) - Cut down the trees (Irving Forest Products, Saint John)
2) - Turn the trees into wood pulp (Irving Pulp & Paper, Saint John)
3) - Turn the pulp into toilet paper (Majesta/Royale Tissues, Moncton)
4) - Package the end product for sale (Master Packaging, Moncton)
5) - Transport the end product to consumers (Midland Transport, Moncton)

Every single step is controlled by an Irving subsidiary.

I've noticed that over the years. There also seems to be a bit of Irving stuff based in Fredericton - I think I remember part of their foresty department being HQ'd there? As well as their Sunbury cargo transport network. And the main shipyard in Halifax is of course owned by Irving as well. I forgot that Midland is also Irving.

I like their system of vertical integration and they generally have a reputation as a good (group of companies) to work for, but it sketches me out that they also control the NB media, or at least historically did. Maybe this is less of an issue in the internet age?

The New Glasgow/Pictou County area of NS is actually a lot like Saint John (in terms of stuff that's come up on this thread) and that's where Sobeys is HQ'd.

I used to live in a rental near the end of St George St, and biked the davenport curve into downtown for my commute, and basically watched those 2 midrises grow. I was always amused by how the 2 were basically twins but with slightly cheaper detailing for the windows on the newer one. But yeah the whole stretch from studio junction to the gay loblaws is my favorite urban ride - great vistas from the ridgeline, though I just google streetviewed it for nostalgia and the typography doesn't read quite as much in it.

They still control a fair bit of the media. The three anglo dailies in the province in Moncton, Saint John and Fredericton are all owned by Irving. The second biggest daily paper in the province, L'Acadie Nouvelle, is not owned or controlled by Irving though Irving does print and distribute it now. (A relative of mine was part of the ownership group of L'Acadie Nouvelle at one time.) Even this cozying up to Irving is too much for some people though. Another (weekly) Acadian paper reacted to that news by saying they'd rather close up shop than be printed by Irving.

Irving also owns a number of weeklies both English and French, and a bunch of radio stations (mostly English AFAIK). Private talk radio doesn't seem to have much of a presence in either language in NB, and so any discussion of current affairs happens on CBC or Radio-Canada.

I don't think Irving owns TV stations any more though they used to own CHSJ which was a private/CBC hybrid station for a very long time, back when the CBC had such creatures in its network (CKWS in Kingston was also one of them).

Love your pics Chadillaccc, the clear blue sky effect on particularly the blue glass towers is piercing.

That's something I'm really noticing from Saskatchewan cities as well, pic taken looking upward with blue sky make Riverlanding in Saskatoon and the McCallum/Mosaic Hill triplets in Regina really striking.

Looking down on Regina's skyline you still get the sky reflection off the glass towers effect.
