This is interesting. The Montreal Metro's chime has just been around since 2010 and they had no warning before? And I've heard that the sound is inspired by the train motors? Is that true and how?

That's a really old video. The sound is from the MR-73 motor voltage hashing that produces an audible sound, thus the dou-dou-dou.

That's the prototype motor for the MR-73 in a MR-63. First train to have been retired in Montréal after the Azur trains came into service.

I'll be sad when the MR-73 are retired. Pretty cool they adopted the noise as the door chime, but the authenticity of the real deal is amazing!

I'm impressed with the long life cycle of the Metro stock. The fully underground system likely has a lot to do with it.

Indeed, they don't have to deal with getting soaked in snow and rain.

I've always loved the door chime and how you hear it twice with older trains.

I like the wooden brake shoes. Helps keep everything cleaner.

Absolutely agree. Nothing will truly get insolved until the GTA has a strong, independent, regional agency that oversees all transport in the region just like TfL. People forget that TfL doesn't just oversee transit. They oversee ferries, roads, taxi licensing, etc.

When I first heard about Metrolinx, I thought it would be just that. Sadly, it seems it was just another agency of the provincial government to add more waste to the public sector.

Metrolinx deserves some flack but the alternative, since more direct provincial control over spending was required (it seems), would be MTO being in charge of non-GO transit projects at the provincial level and considering how HSR went, taking 6+ years just to agree to do a basic EA, I'm not sure that would have worked better.

TransLink installs its first electric-battery bus charger outside SkyTrain station

TransLink has made it very clear that the future of its bus fleet is electric-battery powered, and a new structure installed at the Expo Line’s 22nd Street Station in New Westminster could be the first of many to come.

The public transit authority has built its first overhead electric-battery bus charger at the station’s bus loop.

High-powered charging station infrastructure provided by ASEA Brown Boveri and Siemens Canada installed at each end of the route will support the operation of these buses, which will be charged rapidly within just four to seven minutes while the buses are in layover.

Over the longer term, TransLink plans on converting its entire bus fleet to electric-battery powered to enable the public transit authority to reach its goal of reducing its emissions by 80% by 2050. Fossil fuel buses will only be replaced with electric-battery powered buses when they reach the end of their lifespan.

According to a 2018 TransLink staff report, it is estimated that significant infrastructure investments of between $250 million and $780 million, depending on the electrification scenario, would be required – such as new charging infrastructure and changes to bus operations.

If the plan were set into motion in 2023, depending on the scenario, it could save $1.4 billion or $1.6 billion in operational costs, resulting in net savings of $655 million or $1.3 billion, respectively, by 2050.
