Perhaps the LD store in Polo Park has the same amount of product over a larger floor space. With retail rents quite high in Vancouver vs. Winnipeg, the outcome is small and cramped vs. large and stark.
Davie store, Robson store, Granville+Georgia, and Woodwards (which is closed now, I hear). Yes, they were all quite cramped, even the two-floor ones. But the St. Vital store here is quite large and is still stuffed full of merch. I feel like the PP store still has some filling-out to do, as it has only been open for a few months. It doesn't feel like LD if it's not bursting at the seams lol...

The Zellers stores we had from the last few years were great (The original full line stores). At least the newer ones.
Not crowded, nicer merchandise than Wally's world, pleasant surroundings, Fair prices & they matched anyone.
I hope they can find their way as many retailers need to as they expand.

I agree. I liked Zellers until it disappeared. I was not impressed when it became a very small part of The Bay. Then it disappeared again. So, I wonder if this is true ... I asked AI and received this reply ...

"Yes — Anko is still directly connected to Zellers.
Zellers’ modern relaunch uses Anko as its core private‑label brand, and all available information indicates that Anko remains an exclusive brand for Zellers in Canada.

Anko is KMart Australia.

Anko is carried at Walmart now in Canada. Walmart out here anyway also carries Bouclair, Bouclair shut down all its BC stores quite a few years ago.

Toys R Us (Canada) fully entered bankruptcy today.

The previous Pembina and St Mathew stories in Winnipeg previously closed.

The previous plan was to retain the Regent store. As of right now it is unclear if the chain will be restructured or forced to close.

If you hate the NorthGate shopping centre parking lot now, you’re going to hate it even more! No Frills is opening at the Moore centre on Mcphillips in the former Krazy Bins space!

Again, I don’t find anything funny about this, just relaying some retail news!

That is a really bad location for a No Frills.

I remember when it used to be Swiss Chalet there!

They have a "New" sign by it, implying that access is no longer impeded. Will be interesting for sure. Save on Foods isn't even that busy to begin with, and that parking lot is horrible to navigate. They've designed it for Fiats and Mini Coopers.

As there use to be a Loblaws grocery store there years ago, I wonder if that site is owned by one of their real estate holding companies and they are moving their No Frills brand in there.

It was a Loblaws, then Supervalu then morphed into Superstore.

I believe that's further down McPhilips. The No Frills is going into the former SportChek space at Northgate.

Went by the Regent toys r us on Sunday. It was the busiest I've ever seen it. Everyone had gift cards to spend? Not sure.

Go back, go way back and the outdoor "mall" was Clarks and KMart with not much in between. Northgate Bowling Alley. CLarks became Gambles with not much in between. Then came Zellers and a lid on it. Then remove the enclosure and go open air. It seems now Northgate is just a bunch of stuff jammed together with a food court that is not a food court. I was at Save On today and I rather like the feeling of peace one gets when shopping there.

The area is already too crowded and it is unlikely that Superstore would open a No Frills a couple of blocks down.

The Superstore on McPhillips took over a former Red River Co-op location that failed when Red River tried their hand in getting into the big box store concept.

Red River got out of the retail food business in Winnipeg in 1983 and just stayed in the retail gas station business.

The 2014 Sobey's buying the Canadian stores from Safeway enabled Co-op to get back in the grocery business with 4 stores in Winnipeg. 3 of 4 are still in business. The Main and Luxton Co-op store was not able to renew its lease with Great West Realty Advisors and that location was a short lived Giant Tiger.

I am aware of 5 existing Red River Co-op full grocery stores....I have been to them all by chance. 1120 Grant Ave, 755 Sterling Lyon Pkwy, 77 Vermillion Rd, 3477 Pembina Hwy, 850 Dakota St.
According to my RRC sources in Management, They are looking to get back into North WInnipeg, likely to go where The eventual new Costco goes @ North Main & The perimeter.
All the other big players exist North either on McPhillips or Main. So, other than a new Large Safeway, medium one on McGregor and also Keewatin St.
Sobey's is on N Main and a huge newish Safeway exist in N Kildonan off Chief Peguis.
RRC is also looking for another couple locations eventually. West Winnipeg and another, likely South.

Red River co-op has the 5 grocery stores in the city but also operates grocery stores in Lorette, Selkirk, Gimli, and Stonewall. 9 in total.
