It looks as if there is still a surprising amount of work to be done. The work is going slower than I thought that it would. But, it looks as if there has also been a lot of work done on the piers, as well. I assume that the tracks along the non-bridge sections will simply be covered with gravel and stone dust.

And, what is all of the work going on just south of the SJAM? Is that part of this project, too?
The video was filmed last fall, it's very out of date

It was filmed in November, and they stopped work for the winter in December. It's pretty up-to-date.
This project will be delayed by at least a year.

I'm so excited for this to finally open! For one the views are gonna be so good from the bridge and Second, with Champlain and Chaudiere bridge currently under construction its been absolutely horrible to bike across to either side.

Disappointed with the railing, super ugly. The metal wire looks like something you'd use to mark the perimeter of a farmer's field, and the U-shaped vertical supports look like they're meant for street signs. My guess is they intentionally chose something that's difficult to climb due to recent jumping-incidents, with the unfortunate side-effect of being really ugly.

I think they've use this type of railing because from a distance it becomes invisible and does not take away from the heritage look of the bridge.

I'm not too picky about the railing. Just excited about this new connection. THIS is always has been (since 1973 when Portage opened) the sixth bridge. Glad that we're finally getting some use out of it after 20 years of abandonment.

I wonder if that is intentional. It will probably be a significant wildlife corridor.

Pretty sure there will be a handrail on top. Leaving it wobbly will only make those incidents more likely.

I actually think it will look better than on these renders. At least the wires are not that thick.

If they were serious about not wanting people jumping over, they should have gone with vertical bars instead of horizontal cables below the handrail.

Is that heritage graffiti on the trusses?

I assume that, this being Ottawa, there are no plans to paint the bridge an interesting colour or install decorative lighting?

No.

I hate that they don't use the opportunity to light up these truss bridges while they are rebuilding them - both Commanda and Union.

Could've been a real gem on a night sky backdrop. And I'm not even talking about just making them more people-friendly at night. NCC doesn't care about that.

This Bridge is not an NCC project! its owned by the City of Ottawa and this rehab is also a City project

I'm pretty sure the NCC has jurisdiction over all lighting projects in the NCR, public and private.
