There’s a few in Vancouver. There used to be a small one, like the size of the old Corydon Hardware, near where I used to live in North Burnaby.

Chachi’s is super tasty but yes not super cheap. Still a bummer to lose sandwich shops, Subway is mediocre as fuck at best and boring.

Can someone explain to me why this is happening now instead 30 or 40 years ago? Most of us here grew up knowing about this, but was this the official reason? Was it the non-compete clause or a "Gentleman's Agreement" made amongst the hardware retailers back then?

Home Hardware bought out Beaver Lumber from the Molson Family in the late 90's, and they were of similar size stores to Home Hardware.

Perhaps that was the reason? It's been over 25 years since Beaver Lumber existed.

Home Depot bought Beaver Lumber from Molson

There are a bunch of Home Hardwares in downtown Toronto, but they're either small, high street storefronts focusing on DIYers or bigger building centres that focus on selling construction lumber to contractors. Both seem to avoid directly competing with the big-box retail hardware stores. I'd guess they just stick to their niche, and that niche isn't as common in Winnipeg proper; McMunn & Yates have the lumberyards covered and there isn't enough density to support smaller hardware stores.

Home Hardware has also been franchise operated. That lack of a store in Winnipeg means that no one was willing to step up and put their own money on the table. A lot like why there is no major grocery store in downtown Winnipeg.

I have travelled outside city limits to Home Hardware to get these doors.

I haven't looked lately, but when I bought mine, they were only available at Home Hardware.

Based on the window coverings it looks like a convenience store is taking over the old dons photo on portage downtown.

That’s great, small shops are what we need more of to drive foot traffic. They will capitalize heavily on the next 4 years of construction workers at PP and HBC

Yep. I grew up going to Beaver Lumber with my dad and grand dad in the early 90's. They built an entire deck, fence, and tool shed from them, along with the yellow and green Beaver Lumber branded cans of paint, and hand tools. I think my dad still has a couple of scrapers with the Beaver Lumber logo on it.

Good times.

St vital has already been relocating stores in the Bay wing to consolidate the larger space for UNIQLO.

It's interesting UNIQLO would open multiple stores in Winnipeg even before they have any stores in Minneapolis, Kansas City, St Louis, Detroit, Denver, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, Miami, Atlanta, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Cincinnati or Tampa Bay.

Bullish on Canada. They seem to have a store in every major city now. The last one we need is a Maison Simons and Ill be a happy boy between the two.

The Bunty’s at Ellice and Arlington has begun its conversion to an Esso, hole is dug for the tank, I believe the tank is going in tomorrow as there are signs saying the intersection is closed all day on Nov 1
