Mount Pearl Sq. Underpass for ramp.

After speculation by us all, about the type of underpass for the ramp at Mount Pearl Sq; I dug back thru past articles and found this one.

https://ca.news.yahoo.com/still-no-t...103000210.html

It specifically mentions concrete arch type of underpass, which would seem to jive with the pads poured.

See pics from Google

They've started the pad-base for the inner Sobey's Sq over/underpass that's the onramp from Topsail Rd. The picture below shows the status as of July26th. It looks like it will be
this time next year before that construction is complete, if past schedules are anything to go by. The base looks like the ones used in that past for the overpasses, but perhaps they will use a
concrete arch - there's no sign of anything like that at the site. Even using an precast arch, I doubt we'll be using that onramp this year.

There's a concrete box pedestrian underpass under the offramp as it passes Sobey's Sq, It just ends in the middle of area, so looks like another part of that is still needed, I posted a picture of that last year.

Kenmount Eastbound to TGH Northbound

With the closure of the existing method of accessing TGH Northbound from Kenmount Eastbound; a question popped into my head. How does one perform this in the finished product?

See the diagram. Am I missing something?

Yeah interesting question. Maybe the only option now will be Kelsey drive...

I've had the same thought.

An overpass for the access road would be needed to provide northbound access, and I don't recall a tender for it. Unless it was included in the original tender for the Kenmount overpass.

Judging from google earth, I don't think there's enough room for it anyway.... unless it merges from the left (which I doubt)

I see the same scenario as heading east on Kenmount to continue east on Prince Phillip Drive. You have to travel Kelsey or Pippy or Peet, on to O'learly or Thorburn and to Larkhall and Wicklow to get on to Prince Phillip. There is no room for a ramp....that much is clear. My only solution is to install a traffic light at the ramp near the Capital Hotel directly across from the Fairfield. Traffic would only need to be stopped heading west intermittently as an arrow is activated to allow eastbound traffic to access the Team Gushue.

As for the Team Gushue Highway opening this year, it is looking like it's possible. The Kenmount and Topsail connections look like they could be opened quickly. There will be no way the Penneywell Collector will be finished and I'm having my doubts about the Captain Whelan-Cowan Heights connection and nothing has been done there in awhile. Maybe it will be Topsail to Kenmount only for now.

Topsail Road access is impossible until the ramp underpass is completed, which isn't looking likely as yet. (unless precast arches are transported to the site)

Blackmarsh/Capt Whelan roundabout would probably be quickest to complete.

It looks like it would be possible to build a roundabout at the intersection of Kenmount Road, the Fairfield Inn and the Team Gushue on-ramp to allow northbound access, but it’s not in the plans. Building a median in Kenmount Road so that vehicles turning left into Art Cansel or the Capital Hotel have to proceed 180 degrees around the roundabout would help with the space constraints.

I agree. I've been staring at the satellite view of the work there and the only way I could see it possible would be if they allowed a left turn across traffic into the westbound kenmount to northbound TGH access ramp.

They'd have to put a set of lights there wouldn't they? I mean Kenmount Rd. is already dangerous enough with left turns imho..

Maybe it's just me but I hardly ever remember using that ramp that looped around Tim Horton's. If I ever need to get in and out of the Kenmount Rd area using TGH/ORR it's at the Kelsey Dr/Goldstone St ramps....occasionally the ramps on Kenmount when travelling westbound.

Looks like there will be a divider all the way from Kenmount to Topsail Rd. So I'm guessing all of that portion..

I would imagine so. It could line up with the entrance to the Fairfield hotel parking lot.

It's also equally likely that it won't be possible to access the highway from this direction. The most likely people who are coming from this direction will probably be traveling from Kenmount Terrace or Kelsey Drive, where it would be just as quick to access the highway at the Goldstone exit.

There is a little progress on the Blackmarsh Rd roundabout, but not steady. There's a concrete edger machine on site and they've installed the guide rods around the centre part so they'll soon be doing the road edging. Also looks like they're doing some kind of steps off the roundabout and down into Wabush Place behind the pumping station.

If there's no access north from Topsail Rd till another overpass is completed, and with LOTS of work to get the Blackmarsh Rd roundabout done, the road will be of limited use till next construction season is finished. We've only got, what, 3 months left in this season and there's easily three months work to be done.

jjavman you were right about the concrete arch for the Sobey's Square inner overpass for TGH !
Work has commenced to place the ring segments of the arch as per picture.

So a precast arch tunnel. This shouldn't take as long as a regular overpass.

I'm still sticking to my prediction that TGH will be usable by the end of the year.
