This cold snap still makes me laugh. In the face of every long term prediction / projection for this year.

Forecast mild benign January… experience a cold snap for the ages!
Urban heat island has an impact but the averages suggest there is more going on in the difference between Edmonton City (Blatchford) and the airport, which is more prone to Red Deer like temps. All the other rural stations in the region also have warmer averages than the airport without the urban effect. Overnight lows in Stony Plain (a comparable distance from the city but to the west instead of south) are typically closer to Blatchford and around 6 degrees warmer than the Airport. Nights in particular just seem to get colder in central AB.

Being a bit of a natural “warm” spot combined with urban heat island means that Edmonton is the warmest station in the area, but the international airport is also often the coldest going back decades.

At the moment though, Edmonton is around 5 degrees warmer than most of the stations in the region. Looks like we bottomed out closer to -36 and the forecast for tonight is now -35… might still slip through this without a proper -40C recorded for the City. Still cold AF but in a range that has happened a few times in the last 50 years.

I'm always amazed at how many people seem to be in denial that we have winter. I see many in Ottawa with what you describe and their sneakers look all beat up and ruined by salt etc. Their feet must be like prunes. I see many walking to high school in sneakers, no hat, no gloves, light coat and with ears bright red at -15 or so.

When I drive by the HS on the way to drop my daughter off at her school, I too am amazed at the lack of preperation by so many teenagers. And I try to think back how I dressed back in the day and I can't recall. I'm sure it was more than a hoodie when it was winter. But I can't recall if I had proper boots or not. But I do know I wasn't rockin' white Jordans in the winter. I still don't understand why I see so many people, including adults, wearing white sneakers in the winter. And often they are expensive shoes.

When I was a teenager I could probably handle weather better though so I wouldn't be surprised if I didn't always have a scarf, toque and gloves on.

Once again, it snowed last night, like up to 3-4 cms and was sticking everywhere. Then the rain kicked in and it got up to 5 degrees between midnight and 5 am. I look outside this morning and everything is gone. I was going to put the kids on the sled at like 7pm to go get the mail but I said I'll wait till tomorrow. Sled and shovel still haven't been used this winter and I'm fine with that!

Clear, sunny, dry, cold.

The temperature on my balcony was about -3 C, which means it was probably about -8 C on the street below.
The hotel across the street finally closed their pool and put a cover on it.

Frosty Friday's high at Vancouver Harbour was -6 C, the low was -10 C.

Weather temperatures are so messed up these days. I lived in Kelowna for nineteen years, and the coldest temperature I remember was -18c in grade achool. The past three years have seen temps below -20c.

I worry about the region's future as a wine producer. Those extreme temperatures last year destroyed so many vines. Some were over 50 years old.

Vancouver is similar. I never remember getting negative double digits here. Yet here we are, three years in a row.

There was a sharp short cold snap in NS last winter that did a real number on the Annapolis Valley vineyards.

Currently -7C and partly cloudy in Moncton at 11 AM. Snow is expected to start at around 1 PM, transitioning though ice pellets and freezing rain to rain by about 8 PM. Around 5 cm of snow and ice pellets expected, followed by about 10 mm of rain. Our overnight "low" will be +8C. Gusty winds up to 70 km/hr expected.

It was a tough year for them, and I'm sure the extreme rain events of the summer weren't helpful either.

However, they seemed to come through it alright, with smaller harvests, though. I recall a June frost a few years back was quite difficult, resulting in some wineries having to buy some grapes from Ontario vinyards in order to have enough volume to make production worthwhile.

-9C with a wind chill of -17 and a mix of sun and clouds. Sun early in the day, then more clouds.

Low of -14C (wind chill of -21) this morning. Coldest morning so far but still nothing below -15C. One of the few cities in Canada that has yet to fall below that mark.

The warmspot was Halifax (Dockyard), NS at 10.3C. That is pretty much the same as yesterday because Halifax hit peak temperature at midnight.

Warmest low was Solander Island, BC at 2.7C.

I disagree.

We get these anomalies almost every year, see the table below, and dont forget Okanagan Lake has frozen completely over many times in the past.

I am working closely with a local vineyard this year on a big project and discussed the issues on the death of upwards of 60% of the grapevines in the Okanagan, it wasnt just due to the cold (remember we have some fantastic ice wins here) but how early the cold snap was while the vines had yet to go dormant.

The one thing I would be concerned about is the snow, as it creates a natural insulator for the roots of the vines to help protect from the cold temps through the winter.

We had a decent amount of snow fall last evening but it transitioned to rain over night and has mostly all melted now. Windy as a hell today.

Thanks for the stats.

I do remember Kelowna being below zero for weeks and weeks at a time making the lake freeze over, but these increasingly common harsh cold snaps seem new to me. Judging by the stats, they are more common than I remember.

It was -9c in downtown Vancouver yesterday. Despite the cold, a lot of people were out in the streets doing their thing.

All good! in all fairness your remark about note remembering the frigid temps as a kid made me kind of think back at the same thing and not really recalling the brutal cold either.

-6C with a wind chill of -9 and cloudy (some snow this afternoon). Bring on the sun at this point.

Low of -8C (wind chill of -12) this morning.

The warmspot was Halifax (Dockyard), NS at 11.4C. This is actually the temperature at this hour so this might not be the official high for the day.

Warmest low was Sartine Island, BC at 3.6C.
