As much as I'd like to see REAL do well, if this happens I'd like to see this downtown. As we all know, it's easier to keep people downtown than it is to get more people there. Aka, give people something to do that keeps people downtown for hours and not vacate asap. And I agree, this needs to be more than 10,000 seats. If you're going to do it, do it right. Minimum 12,500+

That said, I don't want any public money spent on this. At all.

Regina downtown definitely needs a development win and securing a catalyst development like a new arena to make another reason to visit and stay in or near downtown. I’m in Edmonton for the week for work and the new Rogers Place with connection to a new Marriott hotel and new Casino have totally change a chunk of Edmonton’s downtown. This is totally possible for the east section of Regina Downtown that has so many empty plots of land.





It’s great REAL wants to have every entertainment facility possible on their campus BUT it would be more advantageous for Regina to have Mosaic Stadium at REAL, a major event/concert/sports facility downtown and hopefully something else in the railyards. Also couldn’t REAL have a satellite facility or campus downtown or at the rail yards?

Winnipeg’s Canada Life Centre Arena plopped onto Rose and Broad Street…

Plans for a provincial safety training centre are taking a big leap forward, following a substantial donation of land to support a flagship facility for the Saskatchewan Safety Council.

Did you forget this is carcentric Regina? There will be a boatload of parking lot to go with a new arena likely so I don't see it going downtown. (Our downtown is all parking lots, but people in this city are fanatical about parking.)

I just don't see room in the public bank account to accomodate this. There are too many other things that should take priority.

With public engagement ramping up on a new arena, I think it's pretty much a given that it's coming. Where we're at now is competing interests vying to influence the location. How I see it:

- Interests associated with REAL arguing that they need the venue on their grounds for financial stability - and making the argument that this is most financially sound decision for the City too
- Downtown interests advocating for a downtown location - based on the argument that it will be the much needed catalyst to stimulate the ongoing challenge of downtown revitalization and be an economic boom for downtown businesses and tourism.

To a lesser extent, I think there are some interests who might be pushing for it at The Yards...but I don't think there's the same power/influence there and I think there are technical challenges too which means the timing doesn't line up.

My sense is that private interests would prefer to see it Downtown, and the City sees value in all three locations REAL (that it makes sense logistically and administratively), Downtown (while the benefits are likely over stated, cities often buy the argument that arena/stadiums are a silver bullet for downtown revitalization), and The Yards (likely see it as an opportunity to kickstart development and set a direction/identity for a stalled development that has had conflicting visions....there's been pitches for a football stadium, baseball stadium, so why not a hockey arena too...).

Just my thoughts.

My preference is downtown, but I have no idea what will end up happening. The only thing I know for certain is that the public will end up covering 90% of the bill, but it will end up as the Semple Arena or something.

Based on this it really should be called the Citizens of Regina Arena. But I'm hopeful we can follow Quebec's lead and get a Slurpee Centre.

Interesting to see how Canada Life Centre is a perfect fit for that location on Broad. That is an excellent site for a new arena IMO... it fills a big gap, it's downtown, yet it's on a major route so as to reduce congestion before and after the game.

As it is, CLC is a bit cramped for a 15,321 seat (for hockey) building. But if you built on the same footprint with, let's say, around 11 to 12 thousand seats, it would feel spacious and opulent.

Parking is probably a non-issue, more than likely there are enough parking lots, parking structures and street parking spaces to accommodate capacity crowds.

It's also only 10,000 to 12,000 attendees instead of 30,000. That is a huge difference. Plus almost every transit route is within a couple of blocks of the location. Just increase frequency two hours before and up to two hours after each game and transportation is pretty much done. It doesn't need a new transit model.

I think there are things coming soon-ish with respect to The Yards. In part because there's funding that has an expiry date.

You are right besides that REAL BS has Stranglehold on development just like the hotel association downtown no new Hotels because of them , Also Harvard developments I’ve done nothing for the downtown for years but a bunch of table top towers they look horrible it’s time for the city to move on from its political agenda
