They usually do this with road striping. A crew will come in and mock up the striping to get drivers used to the new road pattern right after paving. A dedicated team and separate crew will come in and do the permanent striping sometime later, sometimes a few weeks later.

There is a city/state requirement for a waiting period between asphalt paving and thermoplastic striping

Yep. The chemicals in fresh asphalt will dissolve paint and keep the thermoplastic from sticking-- they have to wait on the permanent striping until the pavement 'cures'.

Just curious now that the beltline is to Memorial Dr. and things are lining up for the Southside extension. I haven't heard much talk about the Kennedy/I-20 bridge. Did they ever get a final design/timetable for that?

Also, now that Hulsey Yard is up for sale soon, I'm assuming the whole Beltline tunnel under the yard thing is on hold? Now it doesn't all have to bottle neck through the Krog Street tunnel. Seems now the transit right-of-way could probably be shaved off the some of that Hulsey real estate, like where the wall is now. It would be nice if they could even rework/widen the Krog Tunnel. Now they don't have to worry about the active yard overhead.

Wow, looks like the Beltline folks aren't waiting for the GDOT

WHAT: Atlanta BeltLine, Inc. (ABI) contractors will conduct partial closures on Memorial Drive at the intersection of Bill Kennedy Way and the Atlanta BeltLine’s Eastside Trail.

WHEN: The closures will begin Monday, June 3 from 9:00 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. and repeat nightly, Monday through Thursday, until June 20.

WHERE: Partial closures will be on Memorial Drive, between Chester Avenue and Bill Kennedy Way, impacting the intersection of Memorial Drive, Bill Kennedy Way, and the Atlanta BeltLine’s Eastside Trail.

So awesome!! I walked on the Fulton Terrace bridge the other day. It turned out great and will connect Kirkwood Ave to Memorial adding another quarter mile to the trail.

These are from Tuesday. The physical path looked finished but DOT contractors were putting up new signals and sounded like that would take some more time.

I knew with it being Sunday and gorgeous, the Beltline would be packed today so I did my ride at 9 this morning. They were doing landscaping between Kirkwood Ave and Memorial and had the fence open and let folks explore.

I was able to bike from Memorial to Montgomery Ferry. Epic. I stopped at the end of the interim trail there, but you can really go up to almost I-85 before serious fencing starts. Looking forward to seeing what Georgia Power's "cowboy" trail will be like on this section. It's amazing to stand there and see Buckhead's landmark Park Place Condos so close.

On June 21, 2019 at 6 p.m., the City of Atlanta is implementing a Reduced Speed Zone along the portion of the Atlanta BeltLine Eastside Trail between Monroe Drive and DeKalb Avenue to ensure safe operations of shareable dockless mobility devices during congested periods. Within the Reduced Speed Zone, devices will be geofenced and limited to 8 mph when in operation along the multi-use trail.

The Reduced Speed Zone will be in effect on weekday evenings (Monday – Thursday, 6 p.m. – 6 a.m.), weekends (Friday at 6 p.m. – Monday 6 a.m.), and state holidays (6 a.m. – 6 p.m.). This will include the upcoming Fourth of July holiday.

The City, with technical assistance from ABI, has also identified parking zones along the Eastside and Westside Trails in order to accommodate dockless devices and reduce clutter and allow for accessibility at entrances to the trails. These zones are generally located at most public access points to the Atlanta BeltLine and will be physically marked within the next few weeks. The parking of devices will not be allowed anywhere on or along the multi-use trails except for in these authorized zones. The City is working with device operators to concurrently update their apps to restrict parking outside of authorized zones.

City officials will try again for a federal grant to jumpstart construction of the Atlanta Beltline’s Southside Trail.

Atlanta Councilwoman Carla Smith on Monday introduced a resolution in support of the city applying for the U.S. Department of Transportation’s 2019 BUILD program (formerly the TIGER grant), which will offer $900 million in infrastructure grant funds.

The city hopes to get up to $16 million in federal funding, which would boost efforts to build the estimated $70 million Southside Trail. The city and the Beltline last year acquired all the land for the trail.

Securing a BUILD grant is potentially a huge milestone for the Beltline, as the Southside Trail would link the Eastside and Westside trails, creating more than 10 miles of contiguous pathway. The 4.5-mile Southside Trail will run from University Avenue to Glenwood Avenue. Ultimately, it will link Piedmont Park to Washington Park.

The light rail tracks are planned to go between the trail and the rail depot building that houses Golden Eagle/Muchacho.

I REALLY hope we are selected this time. Beyond that, we need to find another funding source to fast track completion of all of the Beltline, including transit. It's become too important to city to be built primarily by the TAD mechanism which by definition takes a lot of time.

I keep thinking about this and thinking it is critical we connect west and south Atlanta with east Atlanta. Kills me that the short term More MARTA plan is north Ave BRT only between Midtown and the EST rather than crosstown access.

Connecting the WST & EST via SST is also critical to opening up a more robust transit system and more locations that can support density.

Beltline leaders Monday night said they expect to kick off, as soon as this October, a roughly $16 million project that would build a 0.75-mile segment of the planned 4.5-mile Southside Trail.

The segment would span from the southern end of the existing Westside Trai, near University and Metropolitan avenues in Adair Park, nearly to the downtown connector.

Kevin Burke, The Beltline's principal landscape architect, said the funding for the 0.75-mile segment was coming from a mix of bond proceeds, TAD funds and foundation money.
