While it sucks to lose the Zoom flight, let's keep things in perspective. What did they fly last summer, 1x weekly??? You are losing 1 weekly flight that ran for probably 3 months at best and have gained a daily year round flight with AC. That's better than the other way around. I also took a quick look at Air Transat's website and they are returning to YEG this summer with 1x weekly flights to both London and Frankfurt.

It just makes our city look BAD
Look at the names...look very closely....

Strangely, they are affiliated with some very special interest groups, like CAANA, The Kingsway Business Assocaition, Friends of Koziak...ok the last one is not a group per se...

The timing is not accidental. They got together and flooded the letters to the editor simultaneously. Make no mistake. They did. These are the same names with the same schlock they've spewed for years. In reailty, those that came with me in 2003 to that "forum" at the hanger would probably recognize some of the names.

These are not "concerned citizens". These are people with a vested interest in keeping YXD open for personal financial reasons. They have no interest in this city's growth, only their own. CAANA is all about trying to get the small northern airlines a monopoly in Edmonton service.

Pissed off? Then write. If everyone wrote even a 3 line "screw off already" letter, they'd get just as bombarded as they were with the "open it" crew.

2 can play at that game.

Okay, if they can organize and flood the journal with letters, so can we.

/\ Let's do it. Planning for what date?

Noting the 'special interest' groups that wrote in as well might be useful too.

Don't need to note them. THese are groups that, well, are 5 people and a coffee pot with a self-appointed "spokesperson". They are not relevant.

The wrath of concerned citizens is the point.

Queue them up to be sent Sunday afternoon - to all make Monday's paper.

Challenge, to get 30 letters to the journal. If you are ambitious, send them to the sun too...

Pick a point (medivacs, service, time, get the fuck over it, whatever) and keep it short, sweet, and succinct.

Perhaps get the letters to the journal by a Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Monday's paper is garbage and as a result you won't get as many people reading it.

Cold, you should write a letter with the point that the previous people writing in are connected to Canna or whatever the hell their group is called.

I always wonder can you basically write whatever the hell you want to the Journal/Sun and they'll post it? Do they even check the facts before they post these comments? Maybe a letter about the Journal posting points without facts should be written about as well.

As for Zoom, it's a hit in terms of an airline leaving YEG but i agree with most, LHR is much better to connect from than LGW. If Zoom flew to STN or LTN, then i would be disappointed as the majority of low-cost carriers fly to STN or LTN near London. LGW isn't worth much in my mind anyways. As well, having a scheduled daily flight to LHR is worth much more than a weekly flight to LGW. The only way AC would raise fares on the YEG-LHR run is if they also raise the fares on the YYC-LHR run.

Does anyone really know how Air Transat does on it's LGW and FRA routes in terms of loads/profits? Perhaps they will bump their LGW service to 2 times weekly.

They don't have to. It is the author's opinion.

After reading all of the letter's to the editor regarding YXD, I must say I have not read so many ridiculous if not uneducated statements by people who represent a group. One would think you would have your facts in place before firing off letter's...

I will be sending my letter off tuesday for a midweek publication.

It is a dead horse though, isn't it? The terminal facilities no longer exist, and there will never be any capital to replace them. What exactly do the muni-lovers hope to get out of this?

Are they being defensive to make it harder to take runway 30 away and get the height restrictions lifted? Is this continuing debate actually going somewhere?

It comes down to this..

Don and company who have a vested financial interest in air service keep this up to ensure that their last vestages of revenue don't die. Then, they look to expand it to a level that gets them a "monopoly" on said service.

CAANA wants to keep the smaller airlines in GP, PR, FtMac, etc alive. These puddle jumpers cannot compete with the mainlines on service, comfort, etc, so they look to "convenience". YXD is seen as "convenient" - no security, no hassles, no termial issues, etc.

With the removal of runway 12/30, YXD's total "potential" capacity is reduced in case of crosswinds. Now, over 30 years, it has been 4 hours overall that 12/30's removal would prevent aircraft from landing at YXD, but it is the potential again that they harp on.

Then there is that nagging "potential" that they would be able to get YXD back to the Muni of 1979. Removing 12/30 does not mean that could NEVER happen, but it means the chances go from plausible to...well...forgetbaoutit.

The terminal could be rebuilt....or so they think.

This is the continued harping because people believe that as long as the facility exists as is, there is still a "chance".

The really sad part, a redeveloped area would bring so much more revenue to them it hurts.

That's the part that I don't understand. Removing 12/30 will be the nail in the coffin, but removing all the passenger facilities wasn't?

Seriously folks - you haven't been a real airport since your baggage handling facilities were convereted to a high school.
