This isn't the Trump thread, and without any comment on any other aspect of the argument you're involved in, but at this point it seems like hating every single thing Trump touches is eminently rational.

Okay, if you want to be legalistic about it: "almost every single thing."

In the late 2000s it was an observed trend already, because it was a while after people started doing it that this sticky thread finally showed up 7 years ago:

We definitely need to raise gas prices. We also need to abolish private property and seize the means of production.

We see him rollin'. We hatin'!

Now sit back and let him tell you about all the times you saw trucks spewing black smoke into the air just for kicks was a figment of your imagination.

Well, on this forum, let's face it, I'm probably a 0.01% percenter in terms of diesel engine expertise and experience, given that I've fixed and modded my trucks myself (I've always had a strong interest in physics and engineering) for a decade and a half.

I'm very relaxed, no need to worry

In Calgary, Alberta? The Alberta Coal Rollers have like two thousand members or something like that. I don't doubt it's a common sight over there.

There are many things to dislike about him, sure. However, "hate" is probably too strong a word for most of them IMO. Maybe it's just my innate ability to keep calm and carry on?

Those trucks do exist, and they're not for driving in water, they're for entertaining the simple minded and pissing off environmentalists. I've never seen a truck with a 12 inch white chrome smokestack sticking out of the back that also had a snorkel. Trucks with snorkels have utilitarian exhaust stacks, don't roll coal and actually get dirty once in a while. Mudders and coal rollers are two different groups with little overlap as far as I can tell, because I've never seen a muddy truck with an obnoxious stack. Mudding is a lot more common here than rolling coal, but I've seen it a couple times. Usually its guys who have moved back to town after losing their jobs in Alberta.

BTW I drive a truck in a city where everyone drives a truck and most people I know drive a truck.

Also, I am pretty sure high gas prices aren't discouraging them from doing this. It actually seemed to be more common a couple years ago when gas prices where 20% higher.
Same thing in Timmins as well. LOTS of pickup trucks here. There are a few with the stacks and there are some coal rollers but probably not that many overall. Not something I keep stats on. And I agree that gas prices haven't affected people buying trucks at all.

Acajack said he might have spotted his first coal roller ever in Quebec. He said the truck he saw had stacks, but he didn't see any black smoke, didn't hear any diesel clatter, nor see any black soot, so I pointed out we couldn't even be sure it was a confirmed coal roller sighting. We can't even be sure it's a diesel truck, as I've personally seen gasoline trucks with stacks (it's dumb, I agree), and Acajack couldn't tell us any more than "it had stacks".
I've seen coal rollers in Quebec with stacks. Mainly in the Abitibi region. In places such as Rouyn-Noranda, Val-d'Or, Amos, La Sarre and in towns in between.

I think it's safe to say that coal rollers are idiots, but fortunately the number of people engaging in this "hobby" is so small that it's ultimately meaningless.

What I do find puzzling is why the authorities don't go after the coal rollers who deliberately spray their poison at cyclists, pedestrians, hybrid drivers, etc. I mean, if I walked into a crowd with canisters of pesticide and began spraying it on people I'm pretty sure the cops would take me down in a hurry... why aren't coal rollers subject to the same treatment? After all, diesel smoke is a known carcinogen.

I do doubt it, coal rolling isn't common at all - I don't think I've ever seen someone actually do it. Sure, sometimes a poorly tuned truck will blast some black smoke as it passes going up hill, but that doesn't really fit the definition of rolling coal.

Also, it makes no sense that someone would have to jump through these hoops to own a little 4-cylinder 2wd Ranger, S10 or Tacoma, while they could instead freely choose to get a V8 Chrysler 300 or a Mustang or any number of vehicles that use more gas than a base model compact pickup.
Oh, C'mon. The types buying trucks for personal use are not looking at 4-cylinder trucks. Your missing the point on size too. It actually matters more than fuel consumption. A Mustang, for example, can still squeeze around a streetcar and keep traffic flowing. A big ass truck can't. Streetcars suck in this way and fortunately this is more a Toronto specific thing. However, they are over sized for urban streets. We even had this conversation over standard sizes for local streets in subdivisions being too wide and a truck enthusiast interjected because there's not enough space for him to pass a car beside a parked vehicle. We'll talk about soccer mom driving SUVs too if it puts you at peace.

Had my folks in town for the weekend from BC, they stayed at a downtown hotel. Both were amazed at the number of large pickup trucks and SUV's on our streets.

Of course we picked them up and toured them around in our 4Runner which isn't exactly a small car. Said to mum that I'm simply fulfilling my duty to validate the typical Albertan stereotype

I, for a number of reasons, think it's kinda stupid to own anything larger than a midsize truck, unless you tow a heavy ass trailer frequently. Full-size pickups are not remotely fun to drive, and hell, if you're spending time in a vehicle every day, you might as well enjoy it. Soccer mom's with 2 kids and a giant Tahoe confuse me, and truck enthusiasts are weird...

...but...

There's this thing called freedom and doing whatever you want. Normally I'm much more anti-truck but reading some posters subtle readyness to curtail anything they don't like is a little alarming.

As per stereotype, I'm used to the friendlier Winnipeg section haha.

The depressing apartments of Moss Park. We were lucky to lose a few of these at the south end of Regent park a few years ago. Hopefully one day these can be replaced as well.

So what are you?

You should note, as I'm sure everyone here does, how glaring your totalitarian instincts are the moment something you don't like pops up. It's several levels beyond voicing displeasure. Freedom isn't that important until people like you come around

Like I said, I don't see a need for a strong majority of the trucks on the road, but if you were coal rolled by someone, most on this board would understand

I wouldn't say we were lucky to lose the Dickinson Regent Park towers...
