Sorry pal, I see the odd coal roller in Edmonton, but nothing like you present. I see heck of a lot more in in FSJ (ooops is than in BC?) than Edmonton. I do have a diesel, but I don't my Audi will look good with 33" tires.

Well maybe you don't get around much. There are tons down here. Just saw one blast down 101st a few minutes ago.

FSJ is basically Alberta, but Alberta and Edmonton are the unchallenged kings of lifted diesel trucks.

Your diesel Audi with it's cheater codes probably pollutes more than a normal diesel truck does

Did not notice, as I was on my bike.

Forgot to mention....I finally noticed a double rear wheeled pickup in Mississauga. Driving right on the main west-east strip toward the POS downtown.

It had some fence/rails on the sides so likely it had some use with the industrial businesses nearby....but I would rather not care to know.

Ugliest of all is the contrarian just-for-kicks shit that is taking over this forum. Never have I lost so much respect for so many longtime SSP forumers in such a short period of time. You know who you are. For fucking shame. Will you not stand for anything? You think that equivocation is the intelligent argument? If you stand for nothing you will fall for anything.

All things considered, I'd rather see you vent this kind of anger at us rather than at your students...

The sad part is, we agree on lots of stuff. Unfortunately (and the timing was really unlucky too), I happen to like pickup trucks. But rest assured I'm instead biking and walking whenever possible, and driving a base stick-shift tiny 1.5l 4-cyl car generally (uncomfortably full of my tools; I've often have people tell me "you need a truck!" when seeing that).

And I ran my own truck (an old diesel specifically chosen for that purpose) on used vegetable oil for years. Cleaner than burning dead dinos, yes even the super-Earth-friendly ones from Can Do land.

I'm a bit too busy these days AND I lost my oil sources (the frying pans of the cafeteria at Université de Sherbrooke), so I'm back to burning diesel and emitting and black smoke when climbing hills, but it's not my first choice.

Not sure it you're purposely being obtuse but I'm pretty sure he wasn't referring to you owning a pickup truck. Moral equivalency about nazis and defending Trump are more likely what he meant.

It's different when you use a truck for a business. Having a large truck in a city as your daily driver and than customizing it so it even bigger and then bitching about driving in the city are the self absorb asses that belong in this thread.

Trucks for business are fine. Owning a pick-up should be like owning a gun - you need to apply for a license, registration, etc. and demonstrate a need for having it, etc.

We have REALLY wide streets here, and even then with parking on both sides two pick-up trucks often can`t pass.

Not sure if you're purposely obtuse but I was referring to the unfortunate timing of the triple whammy of me simultaneously refusing to irrationally hate every single thing Trump touches, not taking the position that coal rollers should be drawn and quartered, and being a fan of old statues in general.

Those items might not all have had equal importance but they likely all contributed to his "disrespect of me" reaching a momentary peak.

Also, you seemed to have missed the core point of my post which was that him and I have a lot in common, but it doesn't tend to show as often as the few things on which we're not aligned.

BTW, "moral equivalency" is a complete strawman. "I am observing that both sides have been guilty of violence" does not, AT ALL, mean "I think both sides have morally similar causes and each side just see things their own way". If you've paid attention surely you know that morally, Trump has clearly disavowed and condemned one side, singling it out blatantly against "the other side", so the symmetry you want to imply just isn't there. I respect your right to irrationally hate the guy, but please draw the line at creating your own facts.

Seems needlessly complicated when high gas taxes alone will do the trick. You guys must be particularly fond of extra paperwork! (Somebody go tell The Economist!! )

Also, it makes no sense that someone would have to jump through these hoops to own a little 4-cylinder 2wd Ranger, S10 or Tacoma, while they could instead freely choose to get a V8 Chrysler 300 or a Mustang or any number of vehicles that use more gas than a base model compact pickup.

I'm not sure lio45 is really comprehending the coal rolling phenomenon.

Those trucks do exist, and they're not for driving in water, they're for entertaining the simple minded and pissing off environmentalists. I've never seen a truck with a 12 inch white chrome smokestack sticking out of the back that also had a snorkel. Trucks with snorkels have utilitarian exhaust stacks, don't roll coal and actually get dirty once in a while. Mudders and coal rollers are two different groups with little overlap as far as I can tell, because I've never seen a muddy truck with an obnoxious stack. Mudding is a lot more common here than rolling coal, but I've seen it a couple times. Usually its guys who have moved back to town after losing their jobs in Alberta.

BTW I drive a truck in a city where everyone drives a truck and most people I know drive a truck.

Also, I am pretty sure high gas prices aren't discouraging them from doing this. It actually seemed to be more common a couple years ago when gas prices where 20% higher.

Lol, you're funny. I've owned diesel trucks continously for 16 years in a row now (usually even two, sometimes only one) and I am pretty certain you hadn't even heard of the term that I already knew everything about the phenomenon (not like I ever approved it, but if a place has no emissions standards and testing, they're definitely not helping themselves).

In the late 2000s it was an observed trend already, because it was a while after people started doing it that this sticky thread finally showed up 7 years ago:

Sorry, you've failed basic reading comprehension on that one.

Acajack said he might have spotted his first coal roller ever in Quebec. He said the truck he saw had stacks, but he didn't see any black smoke, didn't hear any diesel clatter, nor see any black soot, so I pointed out we couldn't even be sure it was a confirmed coal roller sighting. We can't even be sure it's a diesel truck, as I've personally seen gasoline trucks with stacks (it's dumb, I agree), and Acajack couldn't tell us any more than "it had stacks".

If gas prices aren't discouraging people who don't need trucks from using huge trucks as their daily driver, then gas prices aren't high enough.
