Not all gloom and doom. If we finally can get control of this pandemic and variants, people will be in a mood to get out and celebrate (and spend), much as they did after the "Spanish Flu" pandemic waned after 1920. Result: the "Roaring '20s". Of course the end of WW1 also was a factor, but hey, we're out of Iraq & Afghanistan now. But before the "Roaring 2020s" start, if they do, we may have an economic pullback soon, related to less govt. stimulus and stagflation related to supply chain bottlenecks and soaring wage and materials costs. Much like 1920-21 had a severe recession before the 1920s roared (the roaring phase didn't start until 1923). The 1920s had their slugger/ex-pitcher Babe Ruth. We have Ohtani (hopefully the Angels don't sell him to the Yankees like the Red Sox sold the Babe...but that would complete the '20s parallel).

One thing L.A. has going for it is the 2028 Olympics, and hopefully domestic and international tourism will be booming in the next few years. But it all depends on controlling this infernal covid virus and nasty variants, and getting as many as possible vaccinated around the world. Also it would be of great help if a cheap and easy oral medicine (" therapeutic") were developed that the newly infected could take, much like tamiflu can be taken to reduce flu severity. The current therapeutics aren't entirely satisfactory. An oral medicine that I will call "tamicovid" needs to be developed. I am cautiously optimistic the medicines will be developed and I'm very optimistic about the future of DTLA.

I am very surprised the NoMad in NY has shut down. That was a beautiful hotel as is the DTLA NoMad. The last I read they were still planning on reopening here. It sure is taking a long time for the Proper Hotel to open. I supposed the never-ending pandemic has taken its toll. Downtown really needs to up its game with locals who are looking for staycations. I have stayed at the ACE Hotel, Figueroa, Hoxton and Freehand several times. Great experiences. Fingers crossed the NoMad will reopen soon.

I was also told by a local retailers here in DTLA that NoMad was supposed to be reopening here soon so fingers crossed.

Agreed on staycations - not only for Angelenos but also for people in Ventura, Orange, San Diego Counties and the Inland Empires looking for a more urban experience.

I get instagram ads to "Visit Santa Barbara" and "Visit San Diego". I know we have broader ones for "Visit Los Angeles" but I think something specific to downtown would go along way.

Glad to hear Bottega Louie and PK Market is still going forward. Fingers crossed about the NoMad. Hopefully prior to the pandemic it was meeting expectations as far as bookings.

View of the (I believe) just topped out Fig + Pico Hotel Tower from my new spot *just* peeking over one of the Circa twins.

I wish there was a bit more of a heigh difference between circa and this to avoid the tabletop effect, but the facade at least looks great up close.

Now fingers crossed that Oceanwide crosses the finish-line and this will be a truly fantastic area.

I've read that event is notorious for not necessarily bringing in as many visitors or tourists as hoped. I know locals were described as staying away from LA or not going out during the games held several decades ago. But just as apt leasing in dtla has remained okay or even increased since the pandemic started, who knows what influences ppl.

I was watching some of the vids of this youtuber, a new yorker who has been traveling throughout LA & seeing more things than even I as a native have never visited....he was touring the USC campus not long ago & came upon an area that was rebuilt about 4 yrs ago....this used to be a really worn out 1970s era shopping ctr.

Video Link

He visited expo pk, an anchor of the southern tip of dt....& where a lot of things will take place in 2028....

His vids remined me that LA's climate is a big part of what LA is all about...USC's campus (he also walked through a part of UCLA too)....has a look....trees & plants....that wouldn't be possible if the climate were different. If the weather became cloudier, colder & wetter, which some ppl might actually prefer, the vibe of dtla & the region would change. He also visited the rose garden across from USC, which also wouldn't exist if the city's weather were different.

Great shot!! That’s 4 towers of Chris Dikeakos in that picture and it seems like this picture was taken from a 5th Chris Dikeakos designed tower. Is this taken from 825 S Hill’s Onni tower? Love this vantage point.

Once domestic and foreign tourism picks beyond this pandemic (hopefully next year), pent up demand for leisure travel will fill these hotels again. Look at how fast leisure travel picked up before the delta surge showed up in August. Planes were fully booked. They may have new owners, but they are on ice and ready to go. Things could be booming by '23 assuming we get the virus under control. People are so tired of being cooped up, necessary though it may be.

Is the Fig and Pico hotel tower only 400 feet tall? Maybe it's not topped out yet.

I thought it was going to be around 500.

The 1984 Olympics made a ton of money, even though the Russians boycotted (after we boycotted the '80 games in Moscow because of their intervention in Afghanistan...irony), and the big events were fully attended. I went to the night at the colosseum where Mary Decker fell in the 3000m, and the place was packed. Traffic was light because some people expected total gridlock, but it was actually light traffic because many took their vacations and were not in town. The games were great fun. The opening ceremony which I also attended was outstanding. Look at a tape of it on YouTube sometime, especially the Rhapsody in Blue segment on the peristyle. Great music by John Williams (and Gershwin). There were lots of tourists, including many from Europe. No Olympics before or since was a bigger financial success.

You guessed right. Picked this unit in large part to the skyline views

I'm loving the building a couple weeks in and IMHO it is the most inspired design of the Chris Dikeakos bunch. He seems to talented it fitting a solid size balcony on nearly every unit, so that is a major plus.

Would love some more architectural diversity from Onni though which is why I'm glad they've switched it up for the LA Times site.

When looking at the vids, however, of the youtuber from NYC, the thing that stood out to me was how parts of the USC area & dtla, where a lot of that event took place, have been improved since 1984.....long needed & long overdue.

think of all the international media that was headquartered at the convention ctr before most of the properties around it had been cleared out & cleaned up...

flickr.com

^ that shows repairs to the convention ctr from a tornado that hit it a few months before 1984.

Quote:
A labyrinth of offices, work spaces, and darkrooms was constructed at the Los Angeles Convention Center to house the thousands of reporters and photographers who descended upon Los Angeles to cover the games.

I notice the youtuber named actionkid walked by the rising lucas museum, which is replacing a very bleak large surface parking lot west of Expo park & west of the LA Coliseum for over 60 yrs.....I think a few wood bungalows occupied portions of it in the past.

areas like that, south pk or the old bunker hill area was what got me started on my posts going back several wks.....I'm wanting to both understand but also give kudos to on an evolving dtla & city.

Yeah apparently, an F2, followed a path northward mirroring the 110 until it got to the convention center . Now I see where the movie The Day After Tomorrow got their inspiration from.

I posted a link a page or two ago where Lightstone announced that it was topped out, although it's buried in lots of discussion and videos unrelated to DTLA construction.

Olympics in London and Rio de Janeiro were massive success and really helped the cities. It became fancible to bash Olympics, but they're still a great event that captures worldwide attention.

I'm positive Los Angeles will profit a lot from the games.

Has Oceanwide restarted construction? Any updates? I have seen zero news or any kind of media attention about if for years. Which is frankly bizarre considering the size and location of the project and the amount of time it's been on hold for.

Also, Conrad is great hotel to have in DTLA. Hoping we get one of those over here.
