While i'm not religious, a clear case can be made for religion as it has overwhelmingly been a positive force for humanity in the direction it provides unimaginable numbers of people as well as all the aid it provides the impoverished. As about 7 out of 8 billion people on earth identify with a religion, you might want to ask them beyond that

Are you an atheist?

Yep religion is a waste of time and used to control thought, not to mention providing a cover for pedophiles and extracting money that would be better spent for the common good.

Having people running around thinking they'll live the perfect life in heaven after they die isn't a recipe for a good time here on earth when they get nutty ideas in their head.

Not apologism, just stating facts. Single parenthood’s been around long before the DTES was (after all, two parents doesn't stop you from getting renovicted), and most single-parent kids are living healthy, productive lives well outside of it.

You didn’t show me three studies. You showed me three opinion pieces, two from publications with a blatantly obvious axe to grind. Well, my opinion is that if, quote, “anyone can overcome their station in life through hard work,” then single parenthood is hardly an excuse or a barrier to life the way you claim it is.

Yet the current detox centre is full, which is why the City wants to build a bigger one. No forced treatment policy means they all went there willingly.

Yeah I figured you were an atheist and one who is unable to see all the good religion has done enriching people's lives and providing aid to the poor, instead all you see are the negatives which are vastly outweighed by the positives so i'm sure you have little interest in discussing the issue with religious people to see what they get from their faith because you've made up your mind it's all bad. Your perspective is sad and narrow minded

I didn't say it was all bad. It's mostly bad though. Thanks for trying to pigeon-hole me.

Your "smartest guy in the room" act is pretty tiresome.

And then there's the fun religious stuff like this:

Though of course the Inquisition had a relatively paltry death toll of around 5,000. Small potatoes compared to the millions killed in the Crusades.

But we digress.

You had nothing positive to say about religion so I didn't pigeonhole you at all, if you had anything positive to say why didn't you?

To suggest that religion is only bad is risible and speaks to profound misanthropy although i've come to expect religiophobia at this site.

As far as the smartest guy in the room goes i'll try and drop my IQ down by 30 or 40 points so I can better relate to you guys, would that work? Now i'm getting criticized for being too smart, unbelievable, there's just no pleasing you guys

You are getting criticized for acting like the smartest guy in the room. I guess that went over your head though.

Religion is responsible for the Dark Ages, by suppressing science and coercing people into believing whatever hokum the Catholic church was pushing.

But let's not stop there, how about Islam? Great treatment of women by that group!

Sure, the church has done a few things for the poor and the sick. But on the whole I'd say they are responsible for far more suffering than they have alleviated.

You just admitted to a failure of the system, thank you. So what's holding the City back from building a large one that can accommodate everybody. And how come other cities have the money to treat people, resulting in an absence of lawlessness/homelessness/brazen drug addiction, as compared to Vancouver?

Do you have any examples of this? Healthcare in Canada is provincially funded.

What's stopping the City is that detox centres are a health facility, and the City can encourage Vancouver Coastal health to build a bigger facility, they can (as they have) approve the development of a larger facility, but they can't actually build one because they wouldn't have funds (or the legal jurisdiction) to run it.

Just search "shortage of detox beds" and you'll see that it's almost universal - I won't put all the links because you wouldn't bother to read them, but I found Victoria (Australia) Maine, Washington DC, Massachusetts, New Orleans and Ireland in the first six stories that came up.

Never said it wasn't a failure. I said that all we need for most cases is more of the same. We're getting ready to build the bigger facility right now, as mentioned multiple times.

They do? They'd be surprised to hear that - Seattle alone has 2x the homeless count and the same rate of non-alcoholic ODs, let alone San Fran, NY, Toronto, London or practically any major city in the Western hemisphere.

That is so true. Many of today's human behaviour and decency, as well as law and order, derive from the more popular religions and ideologies, including the fear of God's wrath. An example is the Common Law: written based on the Bible. The Western world and culture mostly derive from Roman Catholicism and Protestantism: a far cry from pagan beliefs or atheistic principals of bygone days. Even atheists of today are shaped by those beliefs, no matter how much they want to deny it.

Just look at how the atheist world of Communism is run: can be ruthless to the core because hardly anyone that runs those places believes that the human soul is accountable for anything.
