ditto. that neighbourhood isn't going anywhere.

Very true...Historic Midtown is not going to be developed anytime this century, and neither is the Morningside area along Monroe that is also adjacent to Piedmont Park.

That's one of the problems with old style car-oriented shopping centers. Once they become established and start making money, it's awfully hard to get them redeveloped.

With regard to the 10th St and south area along the Park, you all may be right - but unobstructed high rise views across the park on 10th may well be built there in due time and they would be a cash cow. Central city park unobstructed views can be enticing. We just need one to start, e.g. Myrtle and 10th.

Another interesting development...

Atlanta prepares to sell civic center
By Katie Leslie and J. Scott Trubey
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

City of Atlanta officials are taking the first steps toward potentially selling another major asset — the Boisfeuillet Jones Atlanta Civic Center.

City Councilman Kwanza Hall is expected to introduce legislation today that could pave the way for the city to sell the aging performing arts center to a developer. The news comes about a month after Mayor Kasim Reed announced plans to sell Underground Atlanta, the multi-tiered shopping center in downtown that has become a financial burden on the city.

Under the legislation, the city would transfer ownership of the civic center to Invest Atlanta, the city’s economic development arm. Invest Atlanta would design a bid process and request proposals from developers to reimagine the site.

The 16-acre civic center site sits across Ralph McGill Boulevard from the headquarters of Georgia Power.

Developing…
This could spur some sort of development in the area.

However, I don't think much will happen as long as the Peachtree-Pine homeless shelter remains in business. I thought that was going to close. Whatever happened with that?

Thanks for posting the rendering... cool. Figo is already working on their replacement location in one of my favorite brick buildings on Marietta St -- the two story at Hampton (was a drug store years ago but has been vacant for at least a decade). And Delia's new chicken sausage place is down the block (they're going to have rooftop dining too)

Well, the folks running the shelter lost their court case over a year ago and were supposed to be removed from operation of the facility. The word at the time was it was to be shut down and the folks were going to be handled by other shelters or services. However, this place is definately still a going concern. There were folks lined up the other day when I drove past.

I take it from your comment, you don't want it shut down? You may be in the majority on this forum. Most of the sentiment has been that this shelter, and the negative element it attracts, depresses the area and discourages re-development efforts nearby.

14th and State

I apologize I couldn't take a picture before I flew out this morning, but I noticed a new sign with a rendering for a nice Retail development on the corner of State St. and 14th street (next to Jimmy Johns, the site of the old Bobby and June's restaurant). Does anyone know what this is or have a link? This would be another good step toward connecting west midtown to east midtown via 14th street.

TBH, I want all the homeless shutters out of the city and move them somewhere else it's not like I don't want them in the city but it's just to many of them and it's ashamed + it's really disappointing because of when tourist come here they ask the tourist for money.

The main issue with Peachtree-Pine is not so much the location but rather appearance and poor management. Contrast with the shelter located a few blocks away at Ivan Allen and COP Drive.

I have to agree. I used to work in Allen Plaza, and I would guess that very few employees in the immediate neighborhood even know the Union Rescue Mission is there. They are excellent neighbors.

The Beatty's homeless warehouse on Pine however is a blight, and it's gone on for far too long.

This intrigued me so I did some sleuthing. It's actually at Mecaslin (a block west of State). It's just a modest shopping strip, but a great improvement on the surface lot it will replace.

I couldn't find any mention of this online, so I cleaned up the rendering:

At Mecaslin and 16th, Steelworks is in various stages of construction. Their sign says leasing begins in the spring, so I guess it's going to open in phases, probably starting in late summer.

At State and 15th, there's some more single family home infill going on:

South Downtown Art Resurgence Continues With AJC Building

The oft-neglected but oh-so-promising south end of Downtown is quick becoming a destination for culture and art connoisseurs. Just a short walk from Eyedrum Art and Music Gallery's new home (complete with rooftop performance space) on Forsyth St., another major art facility is opening on May 8. Gallery 72 is bringing new life into the old Atlanta Journal-Constitution space at 72 Marietta St., which was donated to the city after the newspaper moved to the suburbs four years ago. The 475,000-square-foot building, now known as 2 City Plaza, has undergone a $750,000 renovation, which includes a striking nine-story sculptural marquee on the exterior. The lobby redesign and marquee comes via Atlanta-based architects Stanley Beaman[ and Sears, who won the city's design competition.

It does, but in my opinion that would be great for this area.

In the old days nearly all the car dealerships were downtown. It would be cool to have some sort of contemporary auto dealership in the city again -- maybe a place that specializes in "city" cars, such as hybrids, electrics, minis, etc.
