Worth mentioning as normally this would be a big news story in Vancouver and we'd have to endure the fascinating explanations of Everyone's Favourite Analyst(TM).

Gas dropped below a buck a litre in the valley today; you can get regular for 98.9 in Abbotsford as of 6:00pm. Prices set to drop further from the sounds of it as oil continues to crater.

For reference, Edmonton, which is most often the cheapest major city in Canada to buy gas, is paying 66.9 today.

Strange times we're living in.

Gas goes stale, so you can't horde it, it lasts 30 days. Unlike hording toilet paper or hand sanitizer (60-80% alcohol) which just adds to the fuel load inside your home in case of a fire.

Among people I've talked, they're more concerned about the Americans not taking it seriously until it's too late and then turning into the Purge. Canada, not so much.

Like it's pretty much insane that anyone in Metro Vancouver is hording paper products since the factory that makes it is in New West, and we've been reassured the supply chain is not the problem, it's the panic buying.

Gas lasts a lot longer then 30days. Anyone with a motorcycle or boat can tell you that 6 months is no problem and with fuel stablizer poured in it can last years.

Higher octane also lasts longer. The ethanol content in lower grades has a tendency to pick up water.

I always thought that higher octane fuels went skunky faster than lower octane? Either way, a stabilizer should be used on any fuel left unused for more than three months. It's not expensive either but so far we have not seen gas shortages (which is ironic given our previous shortages) so there isn't a need to stock that up yet.
Likewise yes, Ethanol is hygroscopic like brake fluid. It will absorb moisture which results in line rust and poor performance. Also in older cars the higher the ethanol content the more prone to engine knock you are. This is why some car collectors keep public lists of ethanol-free gas stations.

Being someone who daily drives a 40 year old AMC I am extremely happy to see I am on average paying $50 less per tank than I was last summer.

Unless every room in your house is filled with toilet paper I doubt it's going to add to the fuel load versus everything else flammable in your house.

I never understood why it is said, gas is only good for 30 days without stabilizer. On our farm, a 20 litre jug of gasoline last about a year, without stabilizer(Kept in sealed container). Everything it is put in fires up and runs fine.

Gas does really weird things when it begins to age. Some engines are fine with it but others cannot handle the chemical change. Likewise it's refined differently between brands (Petro Canada and Chevron for example) with different additives that can't deal with extensive storage.

I used a Safeway coupon (5 cents off per litre) plus BMO Air Miles Mastercard (3 cents off per litre) to get 8 cents off per litre in Vancouver

We seem to have a general trend that the Lower Mainland is about 50% higher than Edmonton. That seems to be my experience for some time now.

Yep. 99.9 cents at King Ed & Oak yesterday.

That's the one I was at on Thursday.
They have signs saying full service, but I pumped my own, but I had to go inside to use the coupon.

Actually, it makes decent sense if you break down the math. They pay about 25 cents a litre less in tax plus they don't have the extra, still-as-yet unexplained 10 cent a litre markup we do here.

99.9 - 25 - 10 = 64.9
