There may have been space above the SkyTrain tracks for a passage suspended under the viaduct.

There's a passage from Sinclair Centre to Waterfront Station (and Waterfront Centre) that passes above the tracks.

MNP is probably far enough east that the tracks are side-by-side rather than transitioning from double decker.

...But there's no retail under Shaw or Fairmont (unlike Waterfront Centre), likely due to the residential aspect of both towers (how would maintenance be allocated?, the floorplate / building site for MNP is tiny and the City wants shopping at street level.

Guys, this is Vancouver. It is never so cold or so hot that leaving buildings is that much of an inconvenience. Why build an elaborate series of tunnels when there is a street?

(And while I get why these kinds of tunnels are popular in Toronto and Montreal, when I was touristing there I found them frustrating to navigate. Streets are so much easier to figure out.)

Whatever the mechanics - tunnel, no tunnel, etc - this is shaping up to be one of the classiest streetscapes in the city, and merits concordant street life.
Cafés, shopping, you name it, the new West Hastings is becoming a showcase neighbourhood that needs to be ... showcased?

Yeah, that's the City's view, too.

The only tunnel in the area is from Waterfront Station to Vancouver Convention Centre via Waterfront Centre (with a branch to Sinclair Centre).
(and granted, there is the rain issue)

The only underground connections in Vancouver are really there to drive /funnel shopping traffic to the retail concourses under buildings.
Buildings without significant retail below have little incentive to build a link, even if it would be convenient for office workers (i.e. Park Place; 111 Dunsmuir).

I love taking the tunnels from Canada line to Waterfront station, to the expo line station, then onto the Fairmont Waterfront food court, and through this awesome tunnel with historical photos into the Convention Centre, and then through a beautifully carpeted tunnel with First Nations art and a waterfront and cruise ship view towards the new Convention centre. No need for rain jacket or umbrella on a wet windy day, and believe me not, it's real fast too: with no hassle of waiting at the pedestrian crossings.

It'd be great to get the MNP-Marine Building complex hooked into that tunnel system.

Where exactly does it connect? I looked at the schematics and didn't see anything mentioned and looking from Google Maps, there's just the service road and the entrances down there.

If you are on the east side of the parkade entrance to the convention Centre, across Canada place (the road) from the parkade entrance to Pacific Rim, you can look through the new convention Centre window and see the stairs down going to the passage under the road towards the hotel. If you drive on the lower waterfront road level, you drive under that passageway. Its not used by commuters, as few people are aware of it and its not in the entrance area of the hotel. I expect its main use is a very secure and comfortable passage for VIPs to use during conventions.

That being said, we are getting further off topic, so let's leave this thread for the beautiful new MNP tower. Looking out the 8th floor of the Shaw Tower at the building is an amazing sight. It looks like a saraded knife in the right likghting .

Excuse me, the pictures were all terrific, thanks, but I copied this image as it states what I often mention about West Hastings becoming super elegant. The buildings all "belong" in the hood.
I think the frequency of curving and / or reflective glass contributes, as well as the juxtaposition of international and ultra modern chic, to the central anchor of the priceless heritage Marine Building.

Just an observation: that is one tight and challenging work site. Was going by yesterday and watched as a truck was off-loaded of some supplies - the guy operating the fork lift had to have a flagger stop all traffic and then back up a half block down Hastings with his load - how he didn't scrape the side of parked trucks with the aluminium he was carrying I have no idea.
