I just walked by the 1138 Peachtree site and there are tree removal signs up, but I'm still skeptical.

i'm fine with waiting, but i'm afraid amtrak will see this as a signal to go ahead and build a station along 17th street... and that would probably put the kibosh on the whole thing.

so just curious, 1138 peachtree is now "yoo on peachtree"?

also, the centergy north building, is it just the south half of the lot? so the parking lot will remain between it and the student housing?

Could we finally see some movement on this proposal? It has been a long time coming.

I don't think Amtrak ever planned to be in the MMPT. They've been talking seriously about 17th for a long time now.

Correct. Amtrak enters Atlanta from the northeast (from Charlotte) and exits to the northwest as it makes its way towards Birmingham. This route does not take it through downtown, and trains can't just "turn around". Amtrak serving the MMPT has always been kind of a wishy washy pipe dream.

The problem is Amtrak's policy of not backing trains. There's a wye less than a mile up if they were willing to.

Is this a formal policy? I ask, because I know in Detroit the Wolverine service has to pass the Bay City Junction and then back into some northbound tracks to get up to the station in New Center. This manuever slows down both freight and passenger service in the city, and is being remedied starting this spring with a switch at the West Detroit Junction to the west.

Anyway, I hadn't heard that they had this policy.

That's a huge part of the problem--itself a nonstarter--but also the fact that the wye you're talking about is super-congested, as are all the tracks in this part of the city, doesn't help.

Passenger rail just isn't super achievable in the freight rail nexus of the southeast US. Everything is congested; every project an uphill battle. Better focus our energy instead on new HRT, LRT, and commuter buses.

The only thing that would probably change the situation would be if Amtrak actually developed high speed rail infrastructure which would require newly built purpose specific rail lines- then the line could go right through the MMPT. I know this can happen in Germany, France, China, Taiwan, Japan, etc - the USA -NOT.

Agreed. It's pointless anyway, since who the hell actually rides AMTRAK? no one.

In Atlanta, no one. It'd be nice if we were set up where it would be useful, but really outside of the Northeast it's not very viable. I'd rather get transit set up well in the metro before worrying about transit between metros.

I do

But I live in New York, so it makes some sense. Taking it all the way down to Atlanta would be ridiculous, though.

I ride the amtrak alot, if I do not ride the plane. And I know alot of people that does in Atlanta,You'll be shock how many people that ride the Amtrak in the Atlanta area, just ask around. But the reason alot of people don't ride amtrak because, the lot/transit station is so small and the transit station they've been using was been used since they first started.I know it's historical but it need's to be revitalize somehow.

I've ridden it twice this year NYC to Atlanta and am taking it up to NYC next month. With all the recent delays in the NE it made sense to me to take the train rather than risk another flight delay. You would be surpized how many people take it and its often booked up for a cabin/sleep weeks in advance. I think they could easily fill a second train a day each way.

Biggest pain is the Amtrack station is not on the Marta.
