Great update! But what was the purpose of leaving that little gap between the Parcel M tower and Grand Tower? Small stuff like that bothers me.

I too wondered what was the deal with it. Now they have to go all the way around in order to get a bite at Subway

No one else is worried that Parcel M looks a little like the double Marriott so far?

2nd and San Pedro

From all the photo updates, it looks like a lot of us got to enjoy the beautiful weekend Downtown. Here's another view from this afternoon of the projects going on around 2nd and Los Angeles

that's a nice capper to the pics started by blackcat & eclipse.

I haven't seen the intersection of 2nd st & san pedro since the new apt proj finally broke ground several wks ago, & your pic shows just how large the open space has been around there til the former parking lots were shutdown & replaced by new construction.

I'm old enough to vaguely recall when that entire block...before it was cleared out for parking lots... was mostly very old industrial bldgs....very dreary.....& the higgins bldg seen in the distance...to the right of the cupola of st vibiana's, was still nothing but a sooty, abandoned eyesore.

Younger ppl may not realize just how sad dt had become going back not all that long ago. So the ongoing transformation really needs to be placed in the full context of then & now, & even more greatly appreciated. That's why when certain ppl complain that a new proj like Ava or the sares regis proj at 2nd & san Pedro doesn't fit their requirements, I can't help but go

this vid of flower st, starting from south of pico, captures what has always most stood out to me. And that's not whether bldgs are taller or shorter, or have stores or not, but whether there's a continuity of something that's nice or at least acceptable to walk or drive by.

The southern part of flower still has noticeable gaps here & there, while the street starting around 9th St northward finally shows a rather consistent amt of infill. however, the area around the bonaventure hotel can be rather intimidating to ppl walking around due to all the ramps or streets that seem like mini freeways. But there is at least a sense of completeness.

The vid also catches glimpses of the new apt tower at 8th & Hope st, & the signage on the walls of macys plaza for the new bloc proj. It covers parts of flower st where gaps are now being filled in, or were filled in not too long ago, such as the watermarke tower or concerto/apex bldgs. That's why I don't have a nagging sense of emptiness of portions of flower st towards bunker hill compared with the sections further south, around the palm restaurant & staples ctr.

I have the paper version of yesterday's LA Times, but it was also mentioned there in a article about Grand Ave, WDCH, the Broad, and the tower.

I don't think there's any tunneling involved. Just a concrete cap over the street.

Great video, however, I would have held the shots a little longer Also, your sense of despair and isolation when venturing around the Bonadventure is normal. That crap was the product of 1960's to 1970's planning theory (at least in Los Angeles) when the automobile took priority. The concept was designed to speed the occupant from freeway to work without pedestrian interference. It was functional, efficient, sterile, and a complete failure, as evidenced 40 years later.

I like the look of the new Marriott. It has a solid look next to its neighbor and holds its own well. I'm anxious to see the new design for the upcoming Renaissance, it will probably be done by the same Portland firm and be about 30 stories in height.

I don't mind the Marriott. I could live without the huge blank wall in the back but I'm sure they'll paint it like Hotel Figueroa. Least they better anyway. But it's not terrible building.

I find the Marriott to be on the ugly side and certainly already looks outdated. It's not a big deal though. There's lots of empty lots surrounding it so still many opportunity to build a great looking entertainment district there.

I'm not sure what that is. Any examples anywhere else?

Bustling Bottega Louie cooks up expansion plan

Bustling Bottega Louie cooks up expansion plan

Bottega Louie rents space in a historic office building across 7th Street for a kitchen, tasting room, training facilities and offices.

By Roger Vincent
LA Times
Sept. 25, 2013

"One of the pioneers behind a lively strip of new bars and restaurants in downtown Los Angeles has launched plans to expand.

The owners of busy Bottega Louie restaurant — known for its vast menu, long waits, tasty pastries and deafening crowds — have rented quarters in a historic office building across 7th Street. They are adding a kitchen, tasting room, training facilities and headquarters offices.

The move is part of an accelerating expansion of bars, restaurants and residences along 7th Street, which was once a key shopping boulevard but fell moribund in the closing decades of the 20th century as much of downtown decayed outside of the financial district..."

Two vacant L.A. warehouses to be replaced with mixed-use complex

Two vacant L.A. warehouses to be replaced with mixed-use complex

BY ROGER VINCENT
LA Times
September 25, 2013

"Two vacant warehouses in downtown Los Angeles' growing arts district are being demolished to make way for a 320-unit apartment complex above stores and restaurants.

The project by Lowe Enterprises will include two five-story buildings flanking Garey Street between 1st and 2nd streets. The site was formerly occupied by importer Megatoys, which has moved to the city of Commerce..."

Oh wow, that project is still around? I remember seeing it years ago. Still as ugly as always, apparently.
