The 2 leftmost pieces of equipment drill down through soil and rocks. Then they blast with explosives, using the black rubber mat to cover the blast holes (towards the right, with the spare bucket resting on it).

Then the excavators come along and collect the smaller, looser pieces of ground.

I'm not sure, but I think the little orange drill riding on tracks is just used for drilling the wall anchors (instead of the wall just holding on to the interfacing ground the iron rods grip against several feet of more stable rock/dirt)

Here's jlousa's post from January 10th. 105 feet deep, 9 levels of parking.

OK if they were at 60 feet Jan 10th they must be closing in on 100 by now. Hard to estimate but going by that worker in Mc's photo, if he's roughly 6 ft then I'm thinking 100 ft or pretty darn close. Where's that crane anyway?

Went site office yesterday and asked about progress, they said there's 35 feet more to dig. Apparently running into much rock slowing things down.

So the demo begins. I was told it was going to start 2 weeks ago, so it's more or less on schedule.

Spoke to a member of the team behind the project yesterday and they are now at 70ft out of 105. 2/3rds of the way down, they've hit rock which has slowed them down but it was expected.

Thanks for the info.
I wonder how deep Shangri-La's excavation was?

Well they're parking levels but P1-P2 is more bike storage (commercial/visitor spots) than just car parking.

Wikipedia says Shangri-La's excavation was 85 ft deep (deepest to that date) - so this one is 20 ft deeper, it seems.

Looking at McMinsen's pic I'd say they're about 85 feet where they are, so 20 more to go and let's get the crane down there and start building

Thanks for the updates, Vanville. Wow those are serious rocks, and quite a few are the sizes of a typical family sedan. The haulage fees would be astronomical for this one. At least we know that the foundation for this tower is sitting on some real solid natural footings.
