Just as always with government, it was late 😂

Was the Langara College campus changes already talked about? I must have missed it.

22 new homes proposed for Vancouver's Cambie Corridor

Kenneth Chan | Aug 7 2019

A new six-storey building with 22 strata homes could be squeezed into a single lot that currently contains a duplex on Vancouver’s Cambie Corridor.

The only nice project so far, besides the Oakridge mall redevelopment. As whatnext mentioned, Onni is "shitting their pants" developing this site.

Otherwise, not impressed with anything along the Cambie corridor.

Imagine what they could do if they didn't have to pay ridiculous amounts of money just to get the land, they could put more money into the design and construction.

100 West 49th Avenue (Langara College) - Open House

An Academic Butterfly – Major Expansion Of Langara College Wins Support From Vancouver To Victoria

100 West 49th Avenue (Langara College)
As Darren and I attend a wide spectrum of public meetings, we never expected someone to appear utterly shocked to see us at an event for a proposal that provides no housing. Frankly, as Langara College is in the process of evolving from a commuter school to a more serious institution, the idea of mixing in housing here never occurred to us. It was another voice in the room who took on the role of housing champion, in addition to their commitments to their constituency.

It feels like the line in Vancouver is blurring when it comes to traditional left vs right politics. Instead, the debate is whether our city should be preserved as it is today, or allowed to grow into a global leader in sustainability and inclusiveness. It is still surprising to see people who advocate for social equity rail against new forms of housing, as those who espouse the free market push for student housing in the midst of million dollar homes.

Nowhere was this better demonstrated than at a recent event put on by Abundant Housing Vancouver, which politicians of all backgrounds attended to learn more about our region’s housing crisis. Despite his role as justice critic, it seems local Liberal MLA Mike Lee was inspired to do more, as he came to this event as well

3220 Cambie Street - UDP

Quote:
Creativity Fuels Urban Design Panel Support Of Cambie Village’s Sustainable Northern Gateway

3220 Cambie Street
Already it looks like Hannah and I will be spending a lot of time on Cambie Street in the months ahead. So far, nine open houses have been planned in the area between now and the end of October, and at least two more have yet to be scheduled. Like many proposals under the Cambie Corridor Plan, most of these projects will suffer under extremely prescriptive design guidelines, generate a low turnout, and still be required to face an Urban Design Panel review.

As city staff are more than qualified to review these standard concepts internally, I feel this process only serves to waste their time and tax payer money. Then again, unlike the typical Modern Vancouver Special, this application not only offers a highly sustainable design, but an attractive one too. Hopefully that’s a sign of things to come, as the developer owns several of these former Chevron sites across the city.

Can't recall the names of the first two projects shown in construction on the west side of Cambie near 35th, though judging by the hoarding on the last one (east side) developers are rapidly running out of quality names.

The company name isn't much better.

5740 Cambie Street - UDP + Open House

The Final Straw – Urban Design Panel Recommends City Staff Halt Rezoning Review Process

5740 Cambie Street
Recently there have been a lot of meetings for projects in the Cambie Corridor. Hannah and I have attend some of these, yet we don’t plan to recap most of them. We believe all voices should be heard, but after ten years of discussions on the area plan, most know what to expect, and simply don’t care. As a result, it’s common that less than a dozen people will attend an open house for a 6 floor mid-rise application.

Even with two towers at 14 and 27 floors of rental and strata homes respectively, this concept only attracted about 30 people, though one grabbed a stack of comments forms to distribute to their neighbours. That said, the comments we heard were highly supportive. One person even remarked that the longer they looked at the scale model, the more they fell in love with it. Despite this, city staff still brought the proposal to a very unappreciative Urban Design Panel.

564 - 570 West 49th Ave - Open House

Located a block from the Langara – 49th Canada Line station, this small project only drew 6 people to its 2.5 hour open house. Are these events a good use of Vancouver's public resources? or are they even needed, as the same info can be found here

After announcing it had acquired property near the intersection of West 42nd Avenue and Cambie Street in January of this year, CIBT Education Group Inc. recently submitted a rezoning application to turn the mid-block site at 441-475 West 42nd Avenue — currently occupied by three single-family homes — into a new 203-ft-tall, 18-storey secured rental housing building for students who want dedicated housing in an off-campus environment.

The project, named Global Education City Oakridge (GEC Oakridge), will contain 124 rental homes, with the unit mix established as nine one-bedroom units, 62 two-bedroom units, seven three-bedroom units, and 46 three-bedroom units. A total of 29 units will be set aside as below-market rental rate homes, in accordance to the city’s policy of designating 20% of the units for below-market use.

I know it's student housing but I think they can try a bit harder than that. The massing is fine but it's quite uninspired as is.

Unless I'm missing something, the architecture firm have been around for a long time, but seem to design infrastructure buildings on a much smaller scale - this seems way outside their previous experience. Perhaps the Urban Design Panel will have some commentary.

Drove past Cambie & 35th last night and there was a big For Sale sign on the SE corner -
where I thought one of these similarly scaled buildings was to be built.
