it's too bad that the convention centre isn't immediately connected to the "skytrain" (canada line). how much more convenient would that have been to connect people from the airport to the convention. would save people from taxing or taking cars downtown, and would encourage more people to take transit (at least those going to the convention centre).

what are you talking about? lol

the canada line goes right near it (!!). people can't walk a short distance and so therefore have to take a taxi from the airport???

sometimes the criticisms on this forum just blow my mind.

You know, one thing I'm really not looking forward to is the marina/seaplane terminal in front of the convention centre....it's going to be a huge distraction, and it takes away the whole dramatic thing about the new centre's seawall.

Great photos guys, keep them coming! It looks fantastic and I suggest there would be many a picture taken today that would be at home on any brochure, loads of people, sunshine and a shiny new building, all make for ideal photo ops.

I imagine NBC, and the other networks from around the world, will do more than one story on their spectacular waterfront digs while in town for the Olympics.

Preoccupied? It has only been 3 days. We've [or at least many of us here] all followed this project for quite awhile and quite closely, this is a victory that all of us and every Vancouverite should celebrate.

This is the most important (and largest) building Vancouver has built in decades.

BTW, towards the western end of the facility, on the seawall, I noticed that some assholes ripped and removed the "Biking/Walking" signs off. You'll see when i post the pic.

It's a shame that this same sortof opening day couldn't have happened this summer at BC Place.

That asshole? That is a real man right there, who's unsatisified with the whole thing.

This is the realty. you see, we can only beat the cities in the north or the west of us, because that's who we are. None of those cities have nicer architecture than here, but...the true competition is really in the east and the south of us. So let's post up some other better convention centers, and just be critical about this "worldly" project. Don't criticize me for being like this, I "slap us" only for the better of ourselves.

I think you've just ruined your credibility right there by condoning vandalism.

The time to be critical about the design would've been during the design process years ago, that would have been useful and constructive criticism. I don't see how "slap us" would better ourselves when the $883-million has been spent on the concrete, steel, and wood you've seen.

Fact is, this is a unique world-class facility. I've been to a few convention centres including Hong Kong's, and ours matches its elegance and in some ways is better than Hong Kong's.

For the record, the $883 Million has already paid off.

Interior wise, ours is nicer than Hong Kongs... but on the exterior, I much prefer Hong Kongs.

^ overall, exterior goes to Hong Kong....though the public space around the HKCEC is nowhere near as pedestrian friendly as Vancouver's. I would also imagine that the average Vancouverite would think the Hong Kong design placed in their own city would be much too overpowering.

I've been there twice, and I would guesstimate that their facility is twice in ours in height.

The interior is rather, bleh, but consider that they built their facility in time for the handover. It has aged quite a bit...which begs the question, how well will the new facility age?

And also, I would imagine that given all that wood there is A LOT of sprinklers up there in the ceilings.

I just really hope that the marina/seaplane terminal in front of the convention centre doesn't go ahead, it'll look terrible. I really like it as it is. Convention Centre > Seawall > Water > Immaculate views.
