I thoroughly enjoyed the open house today. It was packed too and I took so many pictures (mostly duplicates of the fabulous ones that SFUvancouver posted). I loved watching all the people pick at the wood parquet walls. The scale of the place is amazing when inside.

I love the pebble walls heading into the exhibition hall. I love the panelling in the ballroom. I love the light fixtures. I love the little nooks and crannies that you find yourself in searching for the perfect view.

Yeah, I kinda like it.

Haha..that's what I did when I was in there yesterday. I enjoyed the open house as well and I hope you guys will have a great meeting today. Not going to spoil to much for you but the Science World structure is a 360 degree projection screen and there is a rotating Earth model in the lobby of VCC. I noticed that all the signs and screen say VCC now...not VCEC.

I loved how the glass windows are at an angle and when you look down...you feel like you are in a cruise ship. Excellent facility and it will certainly "WOW" the world with the great views of the North Shore.

The spherical projection screen is only a temporary fixture, and after visiting the new website it seems that they've renamed the convention centre from "Vancouver Convention & Exhibition Centre" to "Vancouver Convention Centre". Personally, I prefer the former...it's more, professional.

Anyhow, i'm dropping by there in an hour or so.

FYI: the pebble wall is what you can call a Trompe l'oeil, the wall is actually made of Aluminium sheet hammered with indentation.
One of the volunteer was kind enough to inform me of how this wall was created, also did you know that each block of wood adorning the walls throughout the building is associated with a number relayed to a computer
and when a repair needs to be done, it specifies which block to replace, the carpets are actually recycled patterns that when damaged can be replaced without having to rip the entire room.

Great photos all around.

It was very crowded in the open house so it was hard to get a feel for the spaciousness, but overall I was very impressed.

i get the sense that we are in the largest boom post-86, that this project rather beats the original canada place in scale. And the canada line being the aftermath of the expo line.

Can you explain the numbering thing again? I'm not sure I understand.

Yes, most of it is public space. You are able to see a lot after the openhouse....but not the ball rooms and some other small meeting rooms.

I went today, man oh man there had to be at least 10,000 people inside the building when I was there and thousands more outside. At the main doors, it was a continuous stream of people entering the facility - something like 100 people per minute.

As a Vancouverite, I am truly impressed and proud of this facility. The size, the detail....and I'm not the only one, I heard positive comments while walking in the crowds. Everyone was quite impressed, and people were taking pictures all around you.

FYI: when they the builders installed the wooden walls, you may have noticed each piece of wood or block was installed by hand, behind each piece is a sensor that is connected to a central computer, so that in the future if one part of any wall gets damaged or needs replacing it is indicated on a computer by location, number and type of wood used so as to keep the intended effect as when it was first built.
Please do not take my words for it, maybe when you get another opportunity to visit the convention centre, take a moment to ask one of the many volunteers who are well informed on the little secrets that makes the intricacies of this place, IE the aluminium wall or the recycled glass floor.
