Freeport, Bahamas - Director General at the Ministry of Tourism David Johnson was at Freeport International Airport January 16th, 2014, to witness the arrival Sun Wing Airlines inaugural flight direct from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada to Freeport, Grand Bahama.

The aircraft brought a total of 150 passengers who will stay on the island for one week.

Also on hand to greet the visitors was Grand Bahama tourism manager Betty Bethel.

In a recent quote, the Prime Minister, the Rt Hon. Perry G Christie stated, " Over the last eighteen months my Government has been working assiduously with Hutchison Whampoa owners of the Lucayan resort hotels and the Freeport airport and Sunwing/Blue Diamond’s Group, a Canadian resort/tour operator/airline conglomerate, which has resulted in a major partnership to bring about a resurgence in Grand Bahama’s tourism arrivals.

A little off topic, but is there a website to quickly look up approximate passenger numbers between certain cities? (I'm looking specifically Edmonton - Prince George). I'm doubting anything like that is out there, but figure it's worth a shot!

Several new hotels going up east of the airport on airport road. I spotted the new Hilton sign last week when driving around and this:

Developers clearly understand that YEG is growing as they position to meet demand - and Nisku continues to expand.

Been trying to figure out the one going up right beside the Holiday Inn, and across for the Nisku Inn. Looks like a Marriot style.

The type of data you are looking for is not public in Canada. In the USA this data is public.

The data in Canada is produced by the airlines and distributed by Transport Canada to short list of customers (e.g. airport authorities get this data).

It's available in periodic publications from Statistics Canada, but I'm not sure when the most recent publication was.

The scale and quality of hotels in Nisku have improved tremendously. Hilton Garden, Sheraton 4-Points, etc.

Curious thing. I just was looking at the Air Canada web site. It says that Air Canada offers non stop service between Edmonton and Hong Kong. Also between Calgary and Hong Kong.

I can't find actual flight numbers or anything, so I suppose it must be just someone messing about with the site with fat fingers or something.

I'm not sure where that blogger dude gets his numbers from, but they're a little erratic, to say the least. Even those passenger figures don't match up with EIA's own passenger statistics (2013 is about the only correct year) As for aircraft movements, he seems to have simply doubled the actual totals. (Not sure what his rationale would be for doing that) In any event, wrong!

It says non-stop. It is only a passing reference, and since somebody might have made a mistake which means it may soon disappear. It is still there at this moment. Go to the site map from the bottom of the Air Canada home page. The address of the site map is this:

At the bottom is a section entitled "Our Most Popular Routes". One of these is "Edmonton to Hong Kong. These takes you to a booking engine which includes the caption Air Canada offers non-stop flights between Edmonton (YEG) and Hong Kong (HKG)

The numbers all come from Statistics Canada, as noted in the post! You can download the data to see for yourself (both datasets, passengers and movements, are linked in the post).

Someone pointed that out to me in 2010. Some of the Montreal routes don't exist either.
