Funny I was thinking the same thing. The dam will certainly help in flow control but I was wondering what effect the ice will have trying to get through the channel.

I should be past there some time next week so will try and get a few photos.

Oh right, I meant to take some pictures. The structure itself looks to be complete already.

It just looks like any big house in Willow Grove or something. With extremely vague, German inspired elements.

But I'm interested to see what they'll do for the exterior. I just hope it's not tin siding...

Obviously not everyone's going to like that either. There's always going to be someone who dislikes anything... so there's no point in even saying that.

Colour is good when used appropriately.

Yes it is, but unfortunatley designers here seem to think blue and burnt hues of paint are a good application. It would be interesting to see a colour application through glass, light refraction, masonry or ceramics (tiles) I guess I just don't find the application of the colour inspiring in anyway.

I'll echo jrm857, while the new Place Riel might not be awe inspiring, it is a VAST improvement! Over my now 10 years at U of S I've heard debate after debate about getting a renovation off the ground at Place Riel and am happy with how things are looking. I guess I'll reserve my final judgment until the main floor is complete, but it's definitely looking promising.

Jerry and dsin249, thanks for the updates guys, and yeah some recent pics would be great. I also hope they try and make it authentically German in some way, i mean it will never be the old club but that should be something to aspire to. It was a shame that fire happened in the first place.

The river doesn't freeze due to the power plant along the southwest edge of the City and the sewage treatment plant in the north of the city both expelling warm water into the river year round.

I thought it was more about the current, but you may be right, at least about the power plant. The treated sewage discharge though would be downstream of the City.

Interesting entry in Wikipedia:

For the first half of the 20th century, the South Saskatchewan would completely freeze over during winter, creating spectacular ice breaks and dangerous conditions in Saskatoon, Medicine Hat and elsewhere. At least one bridge in Saskatoon was destroyed by ice carried by the river. The construction of the Gardiner Dam in the 1960s, however, lessened the power of the river and by the 1980s many permanent sandbars had formed due to the lowering of the level of the river.

When we were kids way back when, before the dam was built ( and we walked to school 10 miles in bare feet) the highlite every spring was our parents taking us down to the river and watching the ice break up. Huge chucks several feet thick would crash against the bridges much to the cheers of all of us. It actually was very spectacular. This spring the river will be deverted from the east bank because of the new water intake in front of the QE power station, then quicly back from the west bank at the bridge. It should prove to be interesting. It's great to see the bridge moving ahead so quickly.

I happened to be driving by the new Catholic Church Cathedral (in Erindale) last night, and although I am not a big fan of the overall design, the steeple part looks pretty interesting. It looks to be kind of an abstract structure/frame upon which the cross sits. I think it has potential to be quite beautiful if given the right 'light treatment'. Sorry, I don't have photo posting abilities, but if anyone is out that way, it might be worth snapping a pic and posting.

Also the JB Black estates on College have really progessed along as has the condo project on 8th street close to Broadway (name escapes me).

Also have to give a shout out to the ice climbing wall at the Farmers market. Looks very cool at night with the projection of lights on it! Now we just need this weather to change again so we can enjoy the winter festival!!

The colour is very drab and I wish the window in picture 3 was pushed back more so the whole food court could have natural light.

A Mac's, Extreme Pita, a sushi place, a crepe place are in right now. The Cove (pizza + arcade), Computer Store have been in for awhile.

It's been some time since I walked through but I like what I see. It's brighter and has the fresh clean look to it. Overall it looks great in my opinion.

Ok, I do agree, the colour palette is a bit drab but I think it will age well, which for the university is a good thing. I have to comment on U of S food service and how amazing it is. Ryerson's SUCKS! Greasy, expensive and tasteless, U of S is 5 star gourmet restaurant compared to Ry.

Interesting notice in todays Starphoenix. It is an expression of interest from Farm Credit Canada seeking lease space for a location in Saskatoon. They are looking for: 9,000 sq ft, preferrably on one floor; a high visibility; space for illuminated outdoor signage; 30 electrified parking stalls. It also indicates it would consider a build to suit option.

This is good news and may help nudge some of the projects that seem to be in 'stand-by mode' to get their act together and start building. First to mind is 2Seven5 (?? - I hate this name as it is hard to remember) or the new building with signage up by Persephone on the corner of 19th and 2nd Ave.

Come on...let's get some cranes up!

Hey, in response to the claim that the U of S has amazing food service, I couldn't agree more. I am a student at the U of R and the food situation is pitiful. All of the food service units are commissioned to Aramark Foods, a company known for running Arena Concessions... there is NO diversity in food choice at all, and the prices are super inflated. I love visiting the U of S and grabbing an Extreme Pita for lunch...

As a Saskatoon native, it is exciting to visit home and see all of the development that is going on...

Just before Christmas, on a liquor fueled evening, I was talking to a guy directly linked to the 2seven5 project. I asked him outright if it was going to be built and he came right back, no hesitation, with a "NO". He then retracted a bit and said what we already know; it would not be built without a signed tenant. Before I could follow up on that front, i.e., potential tenants on the horizon he, irritated by my pestering, disappeared into the fog.
