Oh hell, it's far better than it was. I'm still pretty delighted with it. Quoting myself? Is that tacky? Anyway, it's funny how you can't find photos of the interior of Saskatoon's airport when it was still hideous and brown. However, the train station seems to share its architectural style with the original airport.... maybe they were designed as a 2-fer....

Congratulations Saskatoon on a REALLY fantastic-looking airport terminal expansion!!!!! This is further evidence of the fact that our two airports are growing at an impressive rate. Regina just posted the 2010 figures (1,120,134 passengers) ---- a 9.6% increase over 2009. Saskatoon will likely have handled approximately 1.2 million passengers for 2010 (maybe more). In recent years, not many other Canadian Tier II airports can post such growth percentages.

There is no official word (as of yet) of a Regina terminal expansion; however, they are expanding the main apron and repaving the runways. Moreover, the RAA is investigating the possibility of a multi-storey parkade-type facility for the parking lot.

Regina airport has already had a expansion couple years ago they added new gates renovated the seating area and expanded the baggage clam area mostly the baggage clam and customs got the expansion but I could see them making the seating area larger since there not much seating in there and new gates.

Massive freeway project on time

The massive Circle Drive south project remains on schedule, with large-scale work to be completed this winter, the city manager says.

Construction has been focused on preparatory and utility work, but residents can expect to see the road network take shape in 2011.

"Twenty-eleven will be the year we see this project rise out of the ground," said city manager Murray Totland.

Saskatoon's largest-ever public-sector construction project began in April with joint venture Graham Construction and Flatiron Construction Corp. winning the bid to complete the work for $223 million. The project has a deadline of Sept. 30, 2012.

The seven kilometres of freeway and six-lane bridge includes the addition of an interchange at Preston Avenue and Circle Drive, land acquisition, utility relocation, drainage, rail underpasses and a number of overpasses and interchanges, and totals $300 million.

The construction of foundations and piers for the new bridge "is well underway," a city report said. The concrete has been poured for a west abutment and steel girders, which will be installed in late February, are being made.

The relocation of overhead and underground utility lines, phone and gas lines is completed in a number of locations and underway in others, the report said.

Work continues on the Idylwyld Drive overpass, where embankments are being built on both sides of the road; the Lorne Avenue interchange, where the Melville Street intersection is now functioning; and the Valley Road and 11th Street interchanges, where work is beginning.

The project has caused and will continue to cause detours, councillors heard, but they haven't caused large backups or delays, Totland said.

"There have been inconveniences but they have been minimized," said Mayor Don Atchison.

The project is on schedule, Totland said, but if the city gets the amount of heavy rainfall this year that it received in 2010, it could fall behind.

Target to buy Zellers stores for $1.8 billion

U.S. retailing giant Target Corp. said Thursday it is buying more than 200 Zellers Inc. stores ahead of its much-anticipated arrival in Canada.

The deal with Hudson's Bay Co., which owns Zellers, will see it pay $1.8 billion to acquire the leasehold interests in as many as 220 sites now operated by Zellers.

U.S. retailer Target Corp. TGT.N on Thursday announced plans to enter the Canadian market, taking over leases for up to 220 Zellers stores owned by storied retailer Hudson's Bay Co.

Target said it will now be able to open its first Canadian stores starting in 2013. It plans to open 100 to 150 outlets throughout the country in 2013 and 2014, laying the foundation for what it called a "more robust presence" over time.

Zellers will sublease these sites from Target and continue to operate them under the Zellers banner for a period of time. Target said it will invest more than $1 billion renovating the leased locations.

In June 2010, Target confirmed that it was considering expansion into Canada and other international markets, but did not confirm where it would open stores.

Hudson's Bay said in a statement Thursday that it was also anticipated that a number of Zellers locations will be assigned to other retail enterprises.

Zellers, which first opened its doors 80 years ago, was purchased by Hudson's Bay in 1978.

Meanwhile, Steinhafel said Target's chief marketing officer, Michael Francis, will lead the company's move into the Canadian market.

"Under Michael's leadership, Target has emerged as one of the most recognizable brands in the world and I am pleased that he will guide our expansion into Canada," Steinhafel said in a statement.

Pretty quiet in here these days but I guess what can you expect for the middle of January?

Looking at the airport renderings, will the airport now be able to accommodate larger aircraft such as a 737?

If you zoom into the PDF it shows the widest plane being the A310-300 and the longest plane being the B757-300

i agree pretty quiet, as for 737, they already have em, west jet, air canada etc, you see them there, i would like to one day see 767s 777s etc, but that mayby a a long time down the road, guess depends on the cities growth, tourist attractions (if we can get more going), and people coming and going

A better question might be when was the $42 million issued for tender? To the best of my knowledge, the only actual tender package that has been issued for this project was the excavation & shoring tender in the fall of 2008 (no contracts ever awarded) and then the same package approximately one year later (again, no contracts awarded).

Has anything actually progressed to the tender stage since this has been transferred to Nasser's control?

A link to your source may be a good a start to solving the mystery.

However I am guessing that it is probably related to Lake Placid Developments and as we know they are no longer on the project.

I'm really confused, what does it mean when it says sample there??

Also I don't think we have anything to worry about, the deal wouldn't have gone through if he didn't have the money in place and he just dropped 5 mil for the land a few months ago.

They really need to update the website to reflect the new ownership and to give the public updates about the status of the project rather than us having to sit around and wait for the newspaper to write an article about it.
