FROST brought together the very best in sport, culture, art and entertainment – culminating in a stunning display at Regina’s Mosaic stadium Saturday night. “I’m struck by the sight of 10,000 people filling into Mosaic Stadium on a February night in minus 18 with 40 KM hour winds to watch two time Olympic champion Elvis Stojko”.

It’s for the Marriott as posted in the initial post.

I assume it's for the increased demand due to SaskBuild&Procurement's IT Division moving into the building next door. The building is now max capacity and there is a severe shortage of parking for employees. The Quality hotel can gain some breathing room for it's guests and at the same time gain some monthly parking revenue.

Agreed. That parking lot has always been very crowded and the street parking packed around SaskEnergy and Social Services (Income Assistance).

Still wishing and hoping that one day they will build an addition to the south with a pool/hot tub and larger spa facility.

It was actually more than just a parkade.

The Hotel Saskatchewan was planning to build a $30 million dollar, 16-storey addition, immediately south of the hotel, and would be connected to the main hotel by enclosed walkways. It would have included 197 deluxe guest rooms, and 70 condominium units, plus retail and recreation facilities, an indoor atrium and underground parking with 150 spaces. The main entrance to the hotel would shift from Victoria Avenue to a new enclosed area reached from Scarth Street. The hotel would have a total of 450 rooms upon completion.

The above information is from the December 8, 1982 Regina Leader-Post.

I know the hotel had a lot of financial issues a few decades ago, plus at the time the economy was in a recession, so I believe this, and the cost of the proposal, is why this never proceeded.

There is a photo of the model that had been made in this article.

Thanks for the info, Draftsman. Crazy! They definitely didn’t plan to match the existing hotel lol.

There were other scaled-down proposals later for just a parkade.

That looks slightly better than the ugly huge box monstrosity they built in Edmonton for the Hotel Mac back in the day.

To see what I am talking about, just google..

The Hotel Macdonald and the box it came in

Leader Building

Repair work on the beautiful Leader Building in downtown Regina.

https://leaderpost.com/news/local-ne...vation-efforts
"...The tallest building in Regina at the time [1930] at six storeys tall and the tallest building for a newspaper company west of Winnipeg, it was also home to Saskatchewan’s first radio station, CKCK .... Repair work will address critical issues with the foundation, masonry, and the historic terra cotta cornice (decorative moulding) and parapet (a low protective wall along the edge of a roof). Later phases include work on the east windows and roof and the removal of the facade paint."

The 10 story McCallum Hill building was built in 1912?

The Leader Building was built between 1911-1912. It was renamed the Leader-Post Building in 1930. It was probably the tallest building in the city only for a brief time until the McCallum-Hill Building surpassed it in height.

Does anyone know if the City of Regina currently has any tax exemptions in place specifically to lure a grocery store to build Downtown and with that also, New Residential/Mixed Use builds?

There was supposed to be a grocery store in the Namerind building, but that was probably more hope than reality. I don't think that lot will ever be anything but a parking lot. Population downtown was dropping last numbers I saw. I'm not sure there's the population to entice a store to open there, tax exemption or not. Previous council had allowed Superstore to leave Albert St with a restriction on the lot that a new grocery would not go in there.
