You might hope so, but I can assure you that you're wrong. Morever, the hotel never closed, and it could be emptied in no time whatsoever.

I have confidence that we will see this tower, or something like it. Just not any time soon.

Also, I love the ESB but I hate the attitude that no other supertalls should be near it. I understand that it is iconic and you would not want it blocked in on all sides, but that would be highly unlikely even with several more supertalls in Midtown. I know most people on this website agree with me, but there are a few who seem to oppose any supertalls anywhere near the ESB. Anyway, the more I see this one the more I like it and hope it gets built sooner rather than later.

I believe that construction will start in 3 to 5 years.

I believe we will see demolition of existing structures starting in less than 2 years, with construction being in full swing by late 2014/early 2015.

Agree with you totally on this point. Personally I think having other supertalls close to the ESB will actually compliment it very well. The increase height over 1 Penn Plaza will add to this neighbourhood in a positive way on the skyline.

Ironically I think it would be sad to actually tear down the Hotel Pennsylvania, but if that is inevitable, then the construction of a tower over 370m would more than make up for the loss.

I know this is only my opinion but I seriously do not like the design of this tower. I don't like the indentation going up the middle, I don't like how it curves and bulges in the middle, I don't like how the facade looks, and I don't like the base. I'm not against having anything near the ESB, but if something is going to be near that iconic building it better look half-decent, and 18 Penn Plaza just does not cut it for me. It looks too fat, and I could even go as far as to say I think it's hideous.

To me it needs a major redesign to make it look more classy and dignified and less effeminate. Once again, please respect my opinion.

I think you are absolutely correct, right down to the skypod. Someone just slapped on the top 1/4 of the CN Tower to the building.

it doesn't even look like they bothered to correctly centre it in the building, but maybe that's intentional.

You can also see the cropped-out sky from the original picture circling the spire like a blue, top-hat halo.

I agree, only because NYC has countless 'masculine' towers. I don't see the problem with a curbed feminine tower in a city of hard edges and boxy forms. What is the problem with curves?

This building seems kind of asian to me. It might be the lighting of it, but it looks like it came from shanghai or something. But i do like it

That's the thing though, it doesn't fit in to me because all of New York's skyscrapers have straight lines. I notice a lot of people like it. If it's ever built I'll probably get used to it eventually and just learn to like it.

Standing out isn't a bad thing...

Many of the proposed new towers don't meet that straightforward boxiness that defines a lot of Manhattan skyscrapers...

Earlier, there was a boxier version of this tower planned...

I never said standing out was a bad thing. Of course its not. The ESB, Chrysler Building, and 1WTC all stand out perfectly and complement the skyline. I just don't think this building stands out in a good way and doesn't complement the skyline. I can't lay my finger on exactly what aspect of the building causes me to think that way. Like I said, if and when it gets built, I'll learn to deal with it

Curvy buildings are a new development in architecture. Look at Canary Wharf which was developed over the last 20 years. It's all boxes. There's a certain city in a certain flat area in the middle of the US which also has a lot of tall buildings, and they're largely boxes.

I think this building with a spire would really complement the ESB. A perfect example of the best of the oldschool and new school right next to each other. But that would really depend of the quality of the spire.
