This is not unexpected given the economy, but the 21C Austin project is no longer listed as a future project on the 21C website. Also, the press releases for the Austin projects have been removed.

This will probably face neighborhood oppostion because it's East of I35:

That master plan is pretty discouraging. It's interesting that the fugly parking is what stands out most. That expansive chunk of asphalt topped out with cars doesn't seem attractive nor appropriately scaled. Much less good for the environment. This site should have greater impervious cover restrictions, and HS&A should be master planning with more vertical density. It's possible to get variances. Heck there's already a tower there.

I should have probably added that in addition to facing neighborhood opposition that anybody with good taste and common sense would be against it as well.

That's a bummer, but not unexpected at all.

On the other hand, this probably means that the property is on the market (or already sold, for that matter) and will be developed by someone else in the near future. Perhaps we'll get a better project than the 21C proposal (not likely, but let's be hopeful!).

I remember there was a story on this years ago and they stated it could support a 10-story tower.

Heirs of Peanuts creator to sell prime commercial parcel near downtown

For the first time in 40 years, the family trust of late "Peanuts" comic strip creator Charles Schulz is marketing a prime parcel just south of downtown that's now home to a Hooters restaurant and a parking lot.

A half-dozen local and out-of-town developers and investors have submitted offers to buy or lease the property, said Harry Whittington, the Austin attorney for the California-based Schulz family trust. The developers are considering building residential, office, retail or hotel projects on the space, Whittington said.

The 1.4-acre triangular tract is bounded by Barton Springs Road, South First Street and West Riverside Drive. Schulz, who died in 2000, bought the land — roughly the size of a city block — when it housed a Pelican's Wharf restaurant.

Whittington said that the site is zoned for commercial, residential or hospitality uses and that height is capped at 60 feet.

Here's the entire article about the RBJ makeover from the ABJ. There're no pictures of the other four proposals.

this looks like something you'd see developed in a houston suburb.

Yea, hopefully the other 4 are WAY better than that one, that is a sweet spot for something special. Also, I've always wanted that Hooters/parking lot to go away. Outside of dt I would say it is one of the best pieces of property to redevelop.

I'm neither here nor there on the design. But just looking at the rendering you can see the parking garages are masked by what will probably be residential buildings. The 'Texas Wrap' as many like to call it. This is clearly a sketchup model, and the horizontal lines are just the floor lines. At first glance, its easy to read it as one large garage, but study the rendering a little more and you can till there are roof lines on the building wrapping the garage(s).

So,

construction halted at the F1 track again yesterday.

Tavo Helmund and F1 seem to be looking for more cash from race promotors, as Talvo has not yet sold the rights to the race to the circuit. So, construction halted, state hasn't handed over the 25 million and says it won't until the contract is concerned.

And Bernie Eccelstone Head of the FIA, F1s governing body) is now saying he doubts the race. I said it before, that NJ race announcement was bad news for Austin.

That sounds like the Manchester hotel next to the convention center. It is supposed to have two parts like that and each about that height right?

Edit: Oh, never mind. Just remembered the room counts is to low to be that one.

Bad news for new hotels?

Don't be surprised if one or both of the new convention center hotels doesn't break ground. Flop1 was one of the economic engines driving the hotel boom. Without Flop1 I'd find investors weary of dumping money into such large projects.....Hopefully they'll get their act together and fix this mess.....

Minus the positive economic impact F1 would've had, I'm kinda glad it got nixed. I can only imagine the assholes it would bring to Austin....

Its not nixed yet, there are negotiations going on as I type this. It does not look good but there is still some time left to get this corrected. If these people really want F1 to happen here they will find a way to make it happen, if they don't care then we will know in a few weeks.
