I'm forwarding this from the transportation thread because it could apply here as well... And nobody seems to look at the transportation thread.

I was thinking about ways to open up our large blocks and here is what I came up with. I've tried to preserve historic buildings as well as align mid block streets with each other whenever possible.

Utah among top 5 for manufacturing

Deseret News

Utah is among the top five states for manufacturing and logistics, according to a report released Thursday.

The 2009 Manufacturing and Logistics Report Card was produced by the Ball State University Center for Business and Economic Research. It lists Utah, Indiana, Missouri, Kansas and Alabama as the top states.

Each state received letter grades in seven categories. Utah received A's for human capital and benefit costs; B's for productivity and innovation and tax climate; a C for manufacturing and global position; and a C-plus for logistics. Utah was third-ranked for human capital and fifth in benefit costs.

The worst five states are Alaska, Maine, New York, West Virginia and Rhode Island, the report said.

Hey DMTowner, I like your ideas. One thing struck me though. If we put in a bunch on mid block streets will we need to put traffic signals at their intersections with the main roads? I think that would slow down traffic considerably, which may be good in a few instances but not in others. For example, I think 300 W. should not have any more signals added mid block because it is a major through street (I do however like the idea of putting in a road 250 S between 200 and 300 W.) but that leaves the question of how traffic will flow. Take Peirpont right now, it has no traffic signals with it's intersections with 200 W. and West Temple and it seems to work fine, but its really only possible to make right turns out onto the main roads... in fact it may even be a good idea to make left turns illegal from the minor roads out onto the major roads. Just thinking out loud here as one has to consider both through traffic and local traffic.

Thanks SLCForme, I see what you are saying. One option would be to sync up the mid block lights with the main intersection lights so they are always green at the same time. I noticed there are a number of areas by the Gateway and CCC where they have already installed new mid-block lights and I imagine they will somehow have to synchronize those too. Also, where mid block streets line up on main through streets they could keep them as right turn only but at least have a cross walk and clean sight lines into the next block for pedestrians.

or.... you could do traffic circles. No lights needed... just sheer guts and bravery and a smidge of agressivness. Just watch out for the blue-haired ladies in powder gray Bonnevilles...

I'm not really a big fan of breaking up a lot of the blocks with streets myself--put in pedestrian walking areas with access to courtyards, cafes, pocket parks, things of that nature--make it a more european feel. Also do you realize that you have proposed a road to go right through the zcmi side of city creek center? while there is a pedestrian route planned there, I don't see it switching to a road--especially since they plan on having outdoor seating for a lot of the restaurants by the Regent.

That road is actually part of the official CCC plan. It's a one way street for drop off and pick up.

Interesting...I had seen the road in the plans but I thought that it was a pedestrian only sort of road / service vehicles at night, I didn't figure it would have actual traffic on it.

As for the 500 S and 600 S traffic diversion, I agree that there is a big dilema on how to get traffic onto 550 S. I don't necessarily think you would want to encourage the majority of the traffic coming off and on the freeway to come right through the center of this development. Maybe the solution is to transform 500 s and 600 S into grand entrances and exist and to open up the concept a little more to encompass or somehow include those two streets as well.

Again just my thoughts. If I can conjure up some ideas I will draw my version of the map to encompass 500 and 600 S. If that is ok of course?

Well, I want at least 3 lanes in each direction because I want it to have the Times Square look - that was my inspiration. If you look at Times Square, there is a very heavy traffic flow, yet it is still pedestrian-friendly. The traffic travels slower and there are lights and cross-walks for pedestrians to cross the road. I think I like the idea of having 3 lanes in each direction with 2 truck lanes on 5th and 6th South. I want it to be a gateway with a high traffic volume to give it a busy, urban feel - but getting the semis out of the development will make it a lot better. I also really like the idea of having balconies over-looking the 550 South boulevard.

While taking photos of the Broadway Park Lofts this morning, I had a guy yelling for me to stop. Whatever, dude. I was on the Pioneer Park side of the street. Anyway, quite the progress at this site with them working on the second level.

Also, I got some more photos of the Hyatt at the Gateway. The entire triangle at the top is now wrapped in the blue-green glass. It looks really good.
